The 17th Immortal 2009-11-08 . chapter 1Dang, it's already over? I'm already head-over-heels for both series, Kenshin and Temeraire; both together like this would be just plain awesome!
…Let's just label me as "desperately hoping you write a sequel to this," okay? |
Zilwicki 2009-10-09 . chapter 1A fantastic story! I love all your RK crossovers, have read most of them several times in fact.
One of these days I will get around to actually reviewing all of them in detail - and your bleach crossovers - and your stargate crossovers... *cough*
Anyway, I really like the scores of background you insert with just a few sentences. I actually had to reread the story sveral times until I caught it all. But that is pretty much standard for your works.
Sanosuke as a dragon with crude language is genius! My favorite feature of Novak´s series are the many dragons with distinct, independent personality and Sano fits that to a t.
The differences from the RK canon are quite fascinating.Aside from some characters being dragons (did I understand that correctly, that Saitoh being "the Shen lung of the Shindengumi" means he is an Imperial dragon? If so, who is his captain? does he even have one?) many plot lines get junked for other reasons.
For example, there is no way that Kenshin could vanish and wander Japan as a simple rurouni now. He may have been able to mostly pass of his red hair as a coincidence - but there is no way a redhead on a white dragon would go unrecognized - and keeping Sano fed would be more difficult than simply surviving as a lone wanderer.
Your reference to British sailors transporting a dragon egg for the Ishin Shishi leaves me intrigued - mercenaries? A different British faction? Britain playing both sides? Can Sano speak English now?
Btw, how old is Kaoru in your story? I think in canon she would be a tddler now. That would make any romance imposible for years, and I don´t think you are going to pair up Kenshin with anyone else.
Lines I particularly liked:
"With a twitch of white tail, the hatchling walked right past Choushuu's leader, sitting down to look amber straight in the eye. "So how come you're the only swordsman here who's not scared spitless?"" This scene allways makes me laugh out loud. That dragon is Sano alright!
" In his mind he could see the soft white of shell, fine as porcelain; almost feel its hard warmth rocking under his hand..." and later: "Soft. I didn't know he'd be so soft. Like fine brocade."Those two sentences are nice pieces of storytelling, fleshing out the mental image you are craftin. But they also hint, that a dragon was a secret wish of Kenshin´s, one he knew would never come true.
""I'm Sanosuke," the hatchling announced, tongue flicking out to taste Kenshin's sweat. "What's your name, and when are you going to feed me?" Aw.
"Himura, Koshijirou told himself forcefully in the face of amber eyes. He is Himura Kenshin, and in my charge, and I will not flinch. Sanosuke deserves that. " Well, you´ve really established Koshijirou as a nice guy now. Sano and Kenshin are in good hands. He may still have reservations, but he will warm to Kenshin in no time.
Btw, I loved the way you depicted the relationship between katsura and Kenshin. It is clear that Katsura cares for him beyond his concerns for a trusted subordinate.
Your ending is very well done. The last sentences make a satisfying resting point, but they also make me eager for the next chapter.
The same goes for your name dropping. Sei, Keishi-kun, Biten, Kyoukoku... who are those guys? How is an aerie dojo organized? How exactly do dragon fit into Japanese society? How will the Bakumatsu play out in this different world of yours?
You give us readers such tantalizing hints and pieces. I know that you have other stories to write, both old and new, but please don´t leave us hanging and continue this story! |
Abby Ebon 2009-10-08 . chapter 1Oh, kee! I loved it, the irony was grand. Hehe. |
Kokari 2009-09-24 . chapter 1Dude! This is freakin awesome ^.^ I love how you're able to mesh the two worlds so well. Are you oging to continue? really hope you do, keep up the great work! |
Anhk d'Aiath 2009-09-19 . chapter 1I loved this story crossover very much, any chance of you continuning it? |
Harlyn 2009-08-31 . chapter 1I always love your RuroKen writing, and this is no exception. I'm not familiar with the crossover, but it seems to follow McCaffery rules. Dragons seem like such an odd addition to the Bakumatsu, but somehow you made it work and made it awesome. |
zafaran 2009-07-02 . chapter 1More, more, please. This is a marvelous start to what looks to be a marvelous series, and I love your RK crossovers. This looks to be an excellent addition to the various sets. I hope your muse and schedule will allow you to write and post more chapters on more stories sometime soon. Keep up the good work. Tripsoverhercats 2009-07-01 . chapter 1After reading this fic I went out and picked up the first Temeraire book out of curiosity. Then the second...
*grins* Thank you so much for introducing me to this series! And I do hope the muses circle back to this little gem for you, I'd love to see what Kenshin and Sano get into! |
 Firehedgehog 2009-06-22 . chapter 1snickers.. totally amusing |
aya1412 2009-06-20 . chapter 1I'm unfamiliar with Temeraire, but I enjoyed it a lot anyway. All your Kenshin stories are great, and I would love to read more. |
JediClaire 2009-06-18 . chapter 1I have just read The Thone of Jade and as such can understand this story a lot more. I hope you can write more based in the Tememaire series, maybe a slight Mulan retelling, based on what we learned in Thone of Jade? I would read it. |
Summercloud 2009-06-14 . chapter 1I'm delighted by this. I LOVE Naomi Novik, and crossovers with her world are so terribly delightful. You captured her tone very well, as well as making a true fan of Rurouni Kenshin laugh with joy. Thank you so much for sharing this clever tidbit. |
LeonaWriter 2009-06-11 . chapter 1Why stop there? I for one can definitely see potential for more, even if it's not chaptered. Definitely not what I was expecting, but written well enough you've got me interested in Temeraire -_-. Sano being Kenshin's dragon was an unexpected and funny twist :D |
Jewelle2 2009-06-10 . chapter 1Dare I hope for a sequel? This story was just too short. More please. |
skenshingumi 2009-06-08 . chapter 1I have to say it is always a banner day when you post another RuroKen cross-over. I know nothing of the storyline or characters that you are crossing it with but you manage to make it interesting and understandable despite that. Once I got the white and brown description of the dragon, I knew it was going to be Sanosuke. The image of Kenshin trying to hold him while a hatchling Sano cuddles up is too precious for words. I wish I could draw but the image certainly fires the imagination. My one complaint really is that you ended it here. I would love to see you develop this 'verse into a longer story arc. How will this affect Kenshin's need for atonement, finding Sano and Kaoru while he is still a skirmisher? You raise lots of possibilities.
I enjoyed the bit of political intrigue you threw in as well. You make it clear that Kenshin is no ordinary bodyguard, thinking through the political ramifications of the actions around him. Katsura is going to be hurting with Kenshin tied up in dragon training, that's for sure. Will this delay victory for the Ishin? I have no idea how long dragon training takes, or if the combination of the Demon of Kyoto and a cursed dragon will make his own side turn on them. I wonder... |
