Lord.Jellyfish 2009-06-05 . chapter 1Oh. Oh, wow. Oh, thank you. Thank you so, so much.
Do you know how utterly, absolutely and completely amazing you are?
First, I watch - okay, get totally addicted to - your videos. Then I find your writing, and my mouth falls open as I begin to understand just how even more amazing you are.
And then you decide to merge the two together and I quite literally fall off my chair in applause.
The video was spectacular, epic, beautiful. That must be said first. (Please, I have to say this... that shot of Rico kicking his heels, in perfect sync with the music... it's pure genius, and it brings this ridiculously large smile to my face every time I see it. That mastery you have over your audience... using those lines from 'More than a Zombie to Me' was not only genius, it was still more perfection, only this time incarnate. Which you then follow up with Miley's 'he just asked her to be his girlfriend'/'I don't believe it!' lines - truly, you are inspiring and a genius. (Or did I already say that? It doesn't matter - you are.) It's been at the beginning of my Favorites list ever since I watched it and that ain't gonna be changing anytime soon.
Then you show us yet more mastery, with the beautiful shot of Miley placing one arm over Lilly. Another moment that always humbles me is your use of Miley's line 'still not lovin' me' after the Lucas scene - if I ever managed to produce anything a fraction of that inspiring, that perfect, that sheer brilliance - I'd be happier with myself than I've ever been in my life. You are that amazing, that incredible... not only should you be ecstatic with yourself, you should know that you are a damn sight better at what you do than every single music video director or editor that I have ever seen in my life. Which brings me rather nicely onto my next point - that it cannot be left unmentioned that you are, quite frankly, humbling - a true master of your craft - crafts, I should say; because it's not just one thing that you excel at, that you inspire others with, that you have mastered to the highest degree and so, so far beyond. It's more than most people will achieve in their lifetimes.)
There's more to that video than I could ever say in a thousand pages - more than I could ever praise were I to invent a completely new term to describe just how awe-inspiring you are (though I must still mention that superb Miley fade effect, so perfectly synced with the music. Oh, and the Aunt Dolly sequence! And the edited conversation! And the epilogue! And Lilly's expression when Miley told her! And Miley saying, 'we love each other' at just the right moment! And - oh, I give up.) Still, I hope that I have given you some idea of the absolute elation I felt when 'Boys of Summer' - on FanFiction, for crying out loud! I still can't quite believe it! - when that golden update dropped into my inbox.
I still watch that video, when I lose inspiration for my writing - you are truly the greatest muse of all time, and for this, too, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your works are so beautiful, they really are. And I mean that. The sheer beauty of what you weave with words, with pictures, with movement and with music... I applaud, praise and relish every aspect of your masterpieces. Thank you... thank you so, so much.
Right then! Onto the piece of beautiful artwork otherwise known as your creative literary masterpiece, Boys of Summer!
The introduction, first of all. May I use one word to describe it, just before I begin? Perfection. Which, really, sums up the rest of the story too.
The idea of the waves, the metaphor that's so cleverly, so subtley weaved into the narrative that it took me a second delicious reading to fully understand the pure beauty of it. The gradual fade back to hard reality; the reminders, the detaling, the purple windbreaker, the sea spray... and so much more. All these little reminders of exactly why you are so amazing.
The timescale theme, the idea of months breaking up their relationship. The way in which you beautifully weave references from the song, from the wonderous, truly spectaclar video: 'to be his girlfriend'; the Cadillac with a Dead head bumper sticker; the sunglasses (two words for ya - nice. Work.); the 'what?!' / 'yes!' / 'huh..?!' exchange - it just works so damn well!
The emotion you made us feel upon reaching those fateful words Lilly spoke... the sadness Miley felt, you made us feel too... not only does that make your work stand out, become so utterly superb, it makes you an author. A writer. A proper master of your craft.
The confidence theme. Genius, once again - pure, unadulterated excellence, shining, radiating out from every metaphorical pore of this work of perfection. Wondrous, in the extreme.
The laugh-out-loud jokes. Oliver's mom's flower garden. Ben and Jerry (I'm serious, that was absolute genius and no mistake).
The poignant sadness upon reaching the next sequence that shows Miley and Lilly are still drifting even further apart - 'Lola didn't go.' The songs, the idea of using them to reflect Miley's feelings - still more genius.
The longing you make us feel for Miley just to say it, to make them both so happy... the 'yes!' feeling when we think she has... then the crushing disappointment that Miley hasn't had the guts. You make us feel.
And then that superb sequence where Miley walks out onto the deck! Seriously, I just went 'YES!' when I read that - that was a truly special moment in the video, and it's so much more so now that I've read that beautiful, beautiful piece of writing.
That succelent, deliciously gorgeous metaphor - the light, breaking over the ocean, the water embracing the sea.
And then you follow it up once more with that seamless, absolutely perfect integration of the song lyrics into the narrative! Just... brilliant.
(I need to say this, too... if the epilogue doesn't get written, I'll (to quote Chris Scullion) 'stamp my feet and cry a bit'. Please, please, please write and post the next chapter in this spectacular literary rush of the imagination. Just the thought of reading more of this calibre of writing is giving me goosebumps, I swear - there, proper goosebumps. Please.
Perhaps we should invent a new scale just to measure how spectacularly amazing you are... the Sensational-o-meter? No... oh, but the Sensational Scale! Now that has a ring to it, don't you think? (And naturally, on the scale - and, of course, on every other - you score a perfect 10.)
Finally... you finish in the best possible style with the ending everyone has been longing and longing for. What can I say? I know.Perfection. Perfection, perfection, perfection. Absolutely, amazingly perfect.
