You 'don't' want it to might be a better word choice.

They 'don't' like him.

Mistakes he 'made' (might be a better word choice, but you need a beta reader).

You need a beta reader. 'isn't' 'aren't' 'don't' 'doesn't' You rarely use 'tenses correctly. Your characters are so sympathetic, I'll bet you could pull a really terrific beta reader. They can take care of the picky little 'tense issues, and you can concentrate on the important emotional character developement.
