2009-09-14 . chapter 11
I've finally managed to catch up on some reading. I absolutely adore this next gen stuff. I mean, I love the whole following canon stuff you do too but this gives me the warm and fuzzies thinking that despite being cursed, the Winchesters could actually have some form of happily ever after. I loved how Dean's boys have been shaped by the influence of the brotherhood, but each character is an individual. There are elements of all of them in the kids, mostly the best parts of them all. I also loved that you showed both Sam and Dean realising how difficult raising them had been for John and that when he was being an **, it wasn't because he didnt care, but that he cared too much about protecting them. Alot of writers tend to villanise John, rather than seeing the deeper root of where John was coming from. It wasn't that he was an uncaring man, but he wanted his sons to be able to take of themselves, and Dean's realisation of this in Decisive Moment was kind of a poignant moment. I don't think he'd ever understood his father's behaviour, despite falling in line most of the time, until he'd had kids himself (and don't all parents say that to their kids??).

I particularly enjoyed Max meeting Harland, and the whole protective Caleb moment was fantastic. The little touches you put in like Caleb shielding James and then pulling JT behind him are what make your stories such a captivating read. You can visualise everything your characters are doing with just one small gesture, and thats very good writing my dear.

I loved all of these parts but I think Decisive Moment was my favourite. It was the crossroads for JT, James and Max, and in many ways sad that their path had been chosen in that moment and they didn't even realise the gravity of what they had done by invoking the Triad power.I do have one small gripe that we didn't get to see the current triad run in and kick some ** whilst being worried about the wee!Triad, but I also understand that from a story telling point of view the third chapter was a much better ending in that it dealt with things more succinctly and really the former scene would have only been there to soothe the fans needs (not that that is a bad thing!)

I really hope you write more of the next gen stuff. I actually enjoyed it much more than the present day stuff. The show has gotten kinda dark lately with all this end of days stuff, it was nice to have some light at the end of the tunnel. And I'll say this, your OCs are always wonderful. Next gen could have gone horribly wrong, but you gave us a completely believable set of new characters that, in a word, rocked.

This chapter is uploaded!

I loved this little story, especially as Ben-as-Dean's-son is one of my favorite plots for fics, and I love your Ben. I have to admit-my dad and another uncle served as father figures for two of my cousins because their dad didn't want the job, and well-even though they had some male figures in their lives, they are a lot more bitter than your Ben is! And a lot less secure... But then again, they had a whole traumatic experience with their mom being left for another woman, which Ben doesn't, so that would explain why your Ben is so much sweeter and more affectionate.

That said, he is still insecure, which is so apt. I love the moments you've shown us, with the name, the ability to step away from hunting, that conversation when Dean finds him in the kitchen and tells him he has a home with them... I find those moments ring the truest. Because Dean and Lisa may have had the best of intentions, but there is no denying that Ben has reason to never really feel like a Winchester, the way his brothers do (I do love that he became one eventually though). And of course, it would be difficult to fit into a family that was complete without you, even if you probably weren't quite ready to move on from the one you lost!

I keep having this thought- what if Ben had come at a time when he had seen Dean with Juliet and JT, and then looked at them as a family and just walked away? Dean is very lucky it didn't go down that way, and probably even luckier Juliet latched on and didn't let go of the kid.

Sorry, long review, but I had to get this out. I've just been doing some counseling stuff, and working with refugees, and well- families that have been split apart can't really ever be put back together the way that they were, you know? And I think you recognize that fact in your fic.

Goodness gracious, Ridley! You guys have been busy this summer!! I think I've finally managed to catch up and boy am I impressed. I'm really coming to love the new generation y'all have come up with, and I like the way you've created entirely new characters rather than just reincarnation of the old generation. I think my favorites of this series are this most recent 3 parter, and also the one about James first experiencing his abilities. In fact, if I had been more up to speed I would have begged you for a sequel to that one. I guess I'm always a sucker for the youngest.

And I love that you and Tidia haven't forgotten about the girls either, even though the focus is still clearly on the boys (as it should be).

My only regret about this Legacy summer was the worry that it meant the end of the wee!chester and teen!chester fics about Sam, Dean and Caleb. But lo and behold, there in my inbox this morning is another beautiful old school fic. Be still my heart!

And I'm so so stoked for this season of the Brotherhood AU too!

So my only remaining question is this: you've done a wonderful job of juggling all of these new facets you've created, but is there any hope of one day down the road having another multi-chapter wee!chester or teen!chester fic from the old guard? I keep rereading Dragons/Phoenix, The Line, and Heroes. I guess they'll always be my favorites!

Keep up the fantastic work! And y'all all have fun with the premiere this week! I know I'm stoked!

Peace,

L

Aw, really terrific! I love these future fics and all the boys and girls. It's cool to read the older guys' reactions to the younger ones, too. I hope you'll continue with this when you can. There's a lot of us out here that hang on every word. :)

Fantastic way to spend a long summer break!

Is it Thursday yet? lol

I love this series so much...this was a great addition to it! Thanks! I would really love to know how 'the conversation' goes though. How do the boys react?!

great ending to the beginning of the next triad.

Every parent hopes that eventually their children will come to understand why they did the things they did and it usually only happens after the children have their own children. Dean, Caleb and Sam now have a much better undertanding of John. Even though Dean is nothing like John and has and will continue to raise his sons differently he knows that much of what John did was only to protect and prepare them for what they had to face in the future.

As much as the Winchester et al, would like their lives to be normal what they know and what they are make that impossible. The best they can hope for is precious times of normal between the reality that is out there.

Great job as always... I loved these insights into the next generation. They kind of make me sad too since I don't think the show will let them have nearly that much happiness in the future - if they even survive past season five! Thanks for your stories!

Enjoyed this series very much and all the creativity and originality that went into it. I was hesistant at first when I knew it was focusing on Dean and Sam's children but you did an excellent job of bringing these characters to life and giving me a different side of Dean and Sam also. And I did not miss the lack of demons, spirits, etc. through most of the chapters. A good job and I look forward to reading more from you. Thank You.

Thanks a lot for this awesome ending! Ouf I was so scared for JT. It was also difficult to see them so worried, especially Dean, almost becoming a physical reaction, wow.

I would love more stories about the future Triad (or the childrens of the Triad if Dean and Caleb plan to live forever, lol). It's so intriguing to discover them.

2009-09-04 . chapter 11
Nice to see the boys are all okay--good job developing their dynamic. They are pretty well rounded characters.

I am kind of weirded out for some reason about how girls are automatically not a part of the Triad and that only boys are really considered to be worthy of the cause. I would have liked to see a lot more of Mary in some of these--we hardly met her at all, and so she felt really unimportant to the future, which is kind of sad, because she's just as much a part of it as the boys are. I would hope that the Brotherhood could be more inclusive...
