You write stream of consciousness very well. I like how Jeff's feelings changed, and he saw the past differently because of one thing Matt had done. I think the only possible way you could have enriched the story was if you explained if the hate Jeff had felt had grown since he and Matt were kids or if it had sprung recently. This really was very good.
