So true. I saw this movie recently, and I was screaming in my head "WHY THE ** IS K/S NOT CANON?"

Yes! You are absolutely right. I finally got to see TMP and it was way more slashy than I had expected - and I had expected a lot, since I had heard there was a suspicious hand-holding hospital scene and something about 'this simple feeling'. Seeing it in context made it even more romantic than it already sounded.

Thanks for posting this and I agree completely with your analysis.

When I finally saw TMP for the first time a few weeks ago, I could not believe my eyes. I thought, whoa, this movie was made for two types of people:

1.) Fanboys, hence all the long drawn-out sequences of the ship and technobabble,

AND

2.) Fangirls, because the "...That simple feeling" line is the GAYEST THING IN HISTORY. I literally had a spaz attack. I had to pause it, run around in circles a bit, squeal, and rewind it. The movie's intention was definitely NOT to create a new fanbase, it was to highlight the parts that the existing fanbase found so compelling. I'm still prone to just shouting out "THAT SIMPLE FEELING" at random and giggling like a madwoman because guess what MY OTP IS CANON, **. I even rattled off the situation to my little sister, I asked her something along the lines of "so like if you were like this robot-like thing and you became sentient but you still lacked emotion what "simple feeling" do you think is most important" and she said "love" without even thinking about it and I squealed. Very loud.

I am so sorry for spamming your review box with this but I had to share. Watching it originally, there were actually a lot of slashy things I didn't quite register, because I do too good of a job of refuting overt slashiness in my head to make it make sense in context. I never thought my obssessive shipping of this pairing could get any more intense, but as I've slowly come to realize JUST HOW CANON it is, it's increased exponentially. :)

Your link to LJ is absent, but this was interesting even without the pictures. I tried to look the LJ entry up using google but it did not appear.

I loved your evaluation on the relationship between Kirk and Spock. I don't happen to agree, but you made several valild points. Their friendship has always been the crux of my affection for the original series, because I like the idea of inter species relationships. The reason I saw Spock's reaction to V'Ger as a giant step toward his accepting friendship with Jim, is because he never allowed that before, yet now he understands the important of it. As a half-human, he will never be whole until he accepts that he has the ability to "enjoy" his emotions without losing his "vulcan-ness. LOL This page doesn't let me say everything I wanted but you wrote an interesting piece. Food for thought.

this is a very good explanation of the backgrounds of star trek. it could be that gene roddenberry made this movie with the thougt of love beetween spock and kirk. i think the deep friendship beetween spock and kirk is also shown in the wrath of khan when spock dies and kirk can“t save him.
thanks for writting this.
