JonWilhoit 6/2/04 . chapter 1Wow, this review is gonna be *so* late, but I think it deserves to be mentioned. Most people fill their reviews with fluff like "I love it!" and "you must continue!" and don't really say anything worthwhile from a reviewing standpoint. So, when I find a good one that deserves to be reviewed, I make an effort to say something worthwhile.
So, here we go. I've never read "Masquerade," but from what I've seen of the occasionally comic excerpts I *have* seen, you did a great job of infusing the character of Winter with a sense of the real. She didn't seem like a character on the page, but more like a real person expressing something they've felt themselves (personal experience goes a long way to motivation! D). On the flip side of the coin, Tycho seemed kind of flat. That could probably be attributed to the fact that none of his motivations are really central to the plot, and I understand completely.
I enjoyed the new take on Winter, the hardline "bitch" image you painted in her internal musings. In other Stakepole books, I didn't get that impression of her. Actually, I didn't get much of an impression about her personality at all. I think your interpretation of her psyche may be a bit out of cannon, a deviation from the star wars universe, but I think it is a well-waranted one. It was definately well done, mature writing.
Contrary to what the others say, I think this is a good stand-alone piece. It depicts a turning point in their relationship (or looks like it), and if you continue with the Tycho/Winter stories, I believe you'd be lowering yourself to all the writers on who just want to play matchmaker. While this fic may be a romance, it actually has *substance* to it. You're a very promising writer, so don't stop any time soon ) |
