Emily Mae 2/4/12 . chapter 1Wordy, this is really lovely! I have such a soft spot for Neville, yet surprisingly haven't read many fics concerning him /and/ his parents. I really love the imagery of the moonlit cottage here, as well as the nostalgic tone as Neville looks through the photo album. The story is equal parts painful and sweet, which I think is a perfect combination for Neville's relationship with his parents. Anyway, I really liked this. Good job!] |
Inkfire 1/19/12 . chapter 1I really liked this fic, it was lovely and full of feelings… The description of the house and the summer, at the beginning, was really beautifully done. I love the idea of Neville dreaming of having his parents in his home, and yet the way you pictured life with them was very lucid and insightful his love for them was strong, but there was also a lot of bitterness lurking within, as they couldn't really reciprocate the love he gave them, since they didn't even recognize him… The way he took care of them was sweet and depressing at the same time, as he really had to treat them like children, and they seemed so… lost… The little part about his grandmother was really insightful, when you just plainly stated that she loved Neville's parents so much that there wasn't really any room for anybody else. It was very sad, that simple fact, and Neville's acceptance of it…
I really love the way you used the photo in your story, it was well thought-out, and beautifully done. Your description of it was so sweet, their love for one another and for their son was basically radiating through your words… I love the way you described them in the garden, Alice seemed so carefree, and you pictured the scene so well, the way it slowly became just like the photo, and Neville watched it happen with bated breath… The last line was really beautiful. Great job, I just loved this ) |
Il'Diko 9/12/10 . chapter 1YOu have done Neville justice. This was great characterisatioj and really well written. My hearth broke for him. Heloves his parents, and wants them to be happy, sadly they can't care for him, they don't even remember him clearly... I'm happy thpugh, that they found sort o a piece and happynes at the end of the story!) |
eSJa 9/4/10 . chapter 1This should be canon, not only is it spot on characterization for Neville but the writing and emotion it brings is wonderful.
A lot of times Alice and Frank are made out to be only a little damaged; they obviously are incapable of taking care of themselves as they have been living at 's since the first war.
My point is it's nice to see them portrayed as they are, and makes the ending that much more bitter-sweet. XD
I really, really enjoyed this and this piece, I can see why Wendy and the other's speak so highly of you. D |
Wendy Brune 9/1/10 . chapter 1So, I remember reading this when in it was in the collaboration, but I wanted to re-read it, seeing as you just came back! I really, really love this story. You write Alice and Frank Longbottom really well. It can be hard, because we don't really have a ton of evidence in the book of how they behave, and yet you write them as if you had a lot to go off of in canon.
I also think you did a great job with the end. It can be hard to write a touching moment between Neville in his parents without making it too coherent, if that makes sense? Some authors almost give Mr. and Mrs. Longbottom TOO much emotional understanding, which I think isn't really plausible. You created a touching and important moment, but it's still apparent to the reader that nothing is /really/ going to change after this, at least not with Alice and Frank. Yes, Neville will always have this memory and understanding, but we realize that the condition and the relationship isn't going to dramatically change.
Very good overall, Wordy! This is so going in the archive, which I think we can do since it's part of an RL collab but not an RLt collab, if you're cool with it? Nice work. |

Angela 11/26/09 . chapter 1 This was a perfect mix of sweet and sad. I've always felt so sorry for Neville... even more than Harry. It's nice that he was able to get his parents home, though it's no picnic to be a caregiver. Thanks for writing this. |
