Reviews for: A Thousand Miles: Song of the Sea

That was moving.

I find that the whole sotry captured the essence of the ocean perfectly- the depth, unpredictability, and...a ocean-y theme.

“Ten years ago," she whispered, suddenly smiling sarcastically. "Ten years ago, I watched my brother leave the port of Singapore. He promised with a smile that he would come back, and tell me the tales of his voyages. And I waited for him, sleepless for half my nights, waited for him to return! Where were you?”
Ten years ago? You should have made it like five hundred years ago. That's what I would have done if I were creative enough.
This reminds me a lot of songs about the sea I've heard. It's so haunting and dark in a cool way. Ghosts stories are nice, haven't seen one in a while. Storyline is awesome...why can't I think of stuff like that? lawl

Yes, it IS much shorter. :P

"I waved, and beamed back at me."
I think maybe there's a word missing somewhere?

Zethos kinda pointed out some of the stuff that I noted. I felt the bit about Garren changing his mind was somewhat too face-paced, but I guess you didn't have much of a choice?

I see that you've included Ralph the Wanderer this time, but not the small chain of quests that lead to facing Latanica. Honestly, I couldn't exactly see the relationship between Ralph and Latanica, so maybe you could've worked on that.

Ok I guess it's just my taste that I appreciate action scenes much more than emotional parts of the story, so may I say that I skipped most of the scenes that were pure dialogue?

Overall quite well-written though, as are most of your fics. The fight scene against the captain could have been flashier with more detail, but then seeing that this comment is coming from me... yeah, do whatever floats your boat xD.

It sure was angsty, and the writing was good, with some creative metaphors. It's really belongs to the upper-class of MapleStory fanfiction. However, there are dubious points -ahem- (see the long review?)...

1)

Judging from the story, the Captain would be some kinda crazed killer killing everyone who tries to travel by sea. However, in that case, the townspeople would have at least rallied together to wipe him out, or paid some people to do it. It appears quite easy in the story - if a I/L mage is enough to cause chaos in the ship, a party of five would have eradicated it.

2)

Garren was too easily persuaded. Someone who died by his ship IS very loyal to the ship, and would certainly face great fear when his ship is in danger of being destroyed. Also, five of his crewmen were also destroyed. I guess that Garren was a really good captain (which is why he got undying loyalty from his crew), and would be angry if anyone of his crewmen had died. Fear and anger added together results in an unreasonable (which is why people can go berserk with a rifle, and later is appalled at what he did - it's self-preservation, a built-in instinct) person. WHAM. Plus, his sister obviously had went many times to try to persuade him, and when she comes this time this would just serve to annoy him. And, he would have known what he was doing - he had many years to contemplate it (killing other people's brothers - hey, it's not exactly that rare having a brother!) , thus a few minutes would NOT persuade him to turn to 'the good side'.

3)

Joaquin wants to travel by the sea? OMGWTF. Although it is written that her family does not believe in ghosts, it would still be CRAZY for them to send Joaquin over the sea when so many fishermen were killed. Sure, they could attribute it to something else (say... rough waters), but it would still lead them to find another way for him to travel out of the town, because rough waters are still dangerous (and they kill a lot of sailors after all). This part needs to be justified more, and a parent would never send their children to near-death. Don't believe :p? Let's have a bet of $50. Fifteen years later tell me if what I said is true XD.

Alright, that's all. Hopefully I have'nt been to harsh ._.

Woah, amazing fic! Latanica seems so angsty: “I died here. Why shouldn’t everyone else die here too? To die at sea, and never reach heaven—they must know how it feels!” Lol, XP.

But I guess that's pretty understandable, since he died like that. Once again, great fanfic!
