Mari83 10/10/09 . chapter 5Said too often how much I like your more centered and confident Logan but with Max too it almost seems like a chain reaction after Cindy’s and Kendra’s little nudge to think about how Logan must be feeling. And that’s one of my favourite things in this story, focusing on their potential to reach out instead of their insecurities, creating a moment of openness and willingness to share that with the night and darkness just leads to this perfect more.
A lot of this chapter, but especially the lovemaking is just what I would have wanted for Meow, when they both sat on the floor kissing. Seems at least just as likely early on, when not yet knowing each other that well also means there is less ballast between them - Logan and the chair and his focus on Eyes Only, Max and Ben and Heat…
"Max had been surprised at the sudden brightness, catching her towel-only, but after a momentary hesitation in the unexpected spotlight, she had started to grin, just as Logan moved toward the lantern. It wasn’t like his towel was much shorter than the skirts her friends wore clubbing, and it definitely covered more than her thread-bare bathing suit did. Besides, it was well worth the stunned look she’d seen on Logan’s usually stoic, controlled features"
I can just imagine Logan’ shock vs. Max thinking it’s not such a big deal, even enjoying his attention but not finding it more intimate than walking in with a set of particularly good looking clothes.
"She suddenly realized none of the flirty pick-up lines she had heard from her friends, and none of the insincere stammering of the boys she’d jumped when in Heat, had any place here – not for Logan; not for what she was thinking about him."
This is just perfect… and another perfect thing is the element of growing , from distanced early S1 Max in the first chapter to her realizing that she doesn’t need any formulas for him, that he has something that allows her to be open and genuine.
"He drew a breath, and Max suddenly knew this was hard for him. Why? she wondered. It’s like he thinks I’m gonna freak out that he’s attracted ..."
That just seems so true and usually for the both of them, afraid the other might find out because of feeling unworthy, thinking a relationsip is unrealistic. So it’s just smile-inducing that in this at least one of them is ready to admit that there’s attraction and willing to move on from there. Logan’s reaction just seemed like the boost of confidence Max needed to act on it, feeling just a bit flirty… but even better is the part of after when he lets her know it’s more than merely “male-gape of appreciation”
"and began to believe that the man who so cavalierly announced that they didn’t have “that kind of relationship” might have hoped that someday, they might..."
Interesting point, Logan’s motive not only his own clamming-up but also making a point that he isn’t another guy cornering her with sexual advances (or even make them part of their quid pro quo) (This has an interesting analogy to the killer machine references, seeing somebody only in the light of their physical abilities or beauty)
"Max deserved more attention and tenderness than she was apt to see from the likes of Eric or other teenaged Lotharios out there. The fact that slowing things down a bit for her might also let him catch his breath and figure out how his new reality worked in bed was just a bonus..."
It’s such a welcome variation to have a confident Logan seeing his strengths , how he can give Max more than the guys she is used to.
"His heart broke for her, and he fought down the wave of anger at Manticore and everyone since who must have taken advantage of a child on the run. Even if she was strong and skilled, she must have needed shelter, food ... guidance ... and what was she forced to do to get them?
“For what you went through...” he explained, “for my not knowing...”
“But you’ve made it better...” she said softly."
Another favorite in this story is Logan’s realizations about Max (especially in the way it comes, less from downright confessions and more by observing, deducing, connecting what he already knows). Starting in the earlier chapters with learning in what conditions she must live even though she could take advantage of her abilities much more and now how her life must have been, that her super soldier abilities aren’t of much use in a scared and confused child looking for shelter. And of course I love his tenderness and understanding in reaction to that, the wish to do something for her and so allowing Max to show some weakness and softness.
