Yay for another Aki/Mitsu fic! This was beautifully written, especially Aki's inner voice and thoughts about Shinji. Nice work. =D

Nothing to apologize for. Strong writing, good introspection, pacing that keeps the scene moving. No perfect ending either, which is definitely good.

I rather like its unevenness as there's precious little tidy about grief.

Crits:

"I should have done it." - I assume he means attend the funeral, but given on its own like that, it feels like a line without context.

"...for the first and last time in his life..." I'm almost sure it wasn't a mistake that you subverted that line in the third to last paragraph. As it is, the line's jarring. I think you're going for an effect or mood, but it's drawing attention to itself there, which ultimately feels clumsy.
