"a really loud howl" ...Perhaps a different set of words would be more appropriate.

I'll assume Tarzan is sad.

Then he threw his head back and howled; it was an anguished, mournful cry that echoed off the mountains and hung in the air long, long after he had ceased. It rang in Mark's ears; he had never heard anything so sad before. New calls suddenly rose from all around them as if to answer.
