I liked your story very much: sad, emotional and beautiful. And I love the fact you didn't change their personalities. I mean Naruto is optimistic, hyper and stupid enough to believe in a dream, so he can tell Gaara something will change. But Gaara on the other hand is a more pessimistic and realistic person. So he can't believe in a "fake truth", as you said. I think that difference made Naruto escape his solitude sooner then Gaara in the series.
Your whole story reminded me a little of a book I read called "The dream" by Emile Zola. There the two lovers lived also in a dream during the night and parted at sunrise. Jut that there they tried to love each other during the day to. Or at least the boy, that resembles Nruto, tried. I don't say Gaara and Naruto love each other like in yaoi style(yuk!).It's just love between friends: they understand each other and they try to comfort each other. It's a pitty you haven't continued this idea.
And I'm glad I've finally found a NrutoXGaara fanfic that is not yaoi!
