Minor observation: does the actual birth date have any significance? It seems part of Snicket's ability to create timelessness and mystery is to be as unspecific about date related detail as possible, possibly using weather and seasons to give some indication of time. This comment is assuming you are trying to create a similar effect, which if you aren't, obviously disregard. Look forward to an update.
