Perhaps not a protector, but he most certainly was the best role model those children could have had. It wasn't only Maycomb that was biased, you have to look at the era and the location. Those sorts of biases are not town specific, in fact Atticus' attitudes toward the African Americans were out of place in that era and setting. Now, as to the actual monologue. It was very well written, but I can't help but feel as though it sounds almost like a suicide note. I liked it, but the mood seems...I don't know, far more hopeless than Atticus ever felt to me. |
