I thought the story was very thoughtful. It is a thinking story, not an action one, which in most sites is unique.

I only have one bad thing to say, Trip is addressed as Commander not Lieutenant. Other than that I liked the story.

You could use aquifers: a water-bearing stratum of permeable rock, sand, or gravel.

They don't use the transporter if they can help it. Also a quarry is an open pit mine. Water would come from an underground well.
