This is very good. I love the contrast between the italicized parts and the regular. Very moving. Great job! :D

The end of "Waters of Mars" was very much a wake-up call for me, and probably many other Doctor Who. The Doctor is no longer the perfect 'good guy,' who can save the day and skip away with a smile on his face. I don't think he ever has been, but it was so much more prominent now than ever before. I could almost see Nine in Ten's reaction to the death of the explorers on Mars. Quoting Nine: "Everybody lives, Rose! Just this once! 'Everybody lives!" I think, in the end, Ten wanted that, and he wanted it so very badly. He's tired, tired of seeing everyone he knows wasting away. And he's decided he's going to fight against it.

And I'm being dramatic. Anyway. Good one-shot. Keep writing!
