This was the first Tamora Pierce fanfic I ever read, way back in 2003.

So in some odd way, you're responsible for the last eight years I've spent in fandom.

And the really crazy thing is, this is just as good as I remember it being - if not better.

I really enjoyed this fic, however old it is. I really liked the emotion in it; Kel and Neal's friendship was so touching. It was sweet.

Ah, my. That was beauteous. A painfully accurate scene, really - and realistic, too. Nobody ever gives thought to how the boys probably all fancied Kel at some point, even if it was only a passing infactuation. Especially as pages; I mean, come on - at the time, they had one good female friend, whereas the rest of femalekind would be these dazzling court ladies they'd need to wait a few years just to WORRY about asking for a dance. And everyone considers everyone when they're young and in puberty, especially romantics like Kel's friends. And enemies. Loved the line on Joren - a great description, as far as KJ should ever go.

So: Neal was grand. Kel was Kel. The ending was sweet, and comforting - I liked that their friendship was secured by the confrontation, rather than only made even more shaky. It was all very wrenching, really, and interesting, too - makes the reader look back on the page years with a new eye. I think this would have made a fine few pages in the shadowy realms between Squire and Lady Knight. Thank you!

I absolutely loved this. It completely reflected their relationship in Squire. Quite sad - but there's great hope at the end for a new friendship, now that all their secrets are out of the bag. Wonderful work!

Terrific. Marvelous job, showing Kel and Neal's relationship as it was meant to be. I know others have said this, but I see it as a compliment: This fic is so good, it's like reading it straight out of Tammy's books.

I can't believe I haven't read this before! I love it - a beautiful, mature take on Kel and Neal's friendship. Wonderful characterization. Left me with a great warm-fuzzy feeling. :)
