viennacantabile 5/23/10 . chapter 1Gah. So I loved this. It made me smile so, so hard. And yes, I totally remember when we discussed this, and I actually wondered recently if we were ever going to see it. But yeah, I thought this was wonderful, and it made me feel seriously happy. I thought it was structured really well, and there were some fantastic images.
1. Summer. I love that she has the benefit of hindsight with Riff, and what she remembers about falling in love with him. I also loved the emphasis on speaking with his legs. It's totally true, and a great detail.
2. Autumn. I absolutely loved this part:
Tony had always been the kid on her block that everybody knew and loved. He'd taught Anybodys and Baby John how to play baseball and how to ride a bike without training wheels and how to snap off the cap of a Coke bottle without looking stupid and how to hawk a loogie and how to do the Jet whistle, and somewhere along the way, Anybodys had fallen utterly and hopelessly in love.
It's such a great picture of Tony, and it really gives us a sense of his character, and how she viewed him.
3. Winter. Well, duh, I loved this part. Loved the opening, and how she realizes that she always falls for the leaders, and how it might somehow have something to do with the fact that they *are* unattainable. Favorite lines:
he is cool and firm, and if you're not careful around him, you may regret it later.
He's not just one of the guys anymore; he's the captain, and he takes this job very seriously—so seriously, in fact, that he becomes cool and distant without even realizing it, and his nickname gains a whole new meaning.
This does not, however, deter Anybodys; the way she's treated has never exactly stopped her before.
She can't stand the thought of him pushing her away just when she's gained his respect, and so she keeps her mouth shut and goes to bed cold every night.
4. Spring. I loved this one, too, and especially how it's contrasted with the previous three. It really shows how A-Rab is the right one for her. Anybodys is the kind of girl who needs a challenge, and opposition, and she and A-Rab work so well together. I love how she's realizing that this is love the way that's meant for her. And finally, I love the way you tie it all together at the end. It's a great closing, and very effective. Lovely, wonderful job, dear! :) |
