I disagree I think. I don't think "best friends" is a singular thing depending on the people and depending on situations at all. Konoka is the love of Setsuna's life and vice versa. Asuna is both of their best friend. Asuna and Ayaka, once they get over themselves, are either very close friends or lovers. It's pretty simple, but that's just how I see it.

Their classmates are either in love with Negi or like a little brother or a friend in a rarer occasion he's just a teacher like with Chizuru. That situation is a little more complicated. But as I said. Just how I see it.

I understand this well. Life would be easier in black and white, but "good friend" can mean many things. I have a very good friend who I used to like but I still keep close, but I also have a boyfriend. Neither can be replaced.

I enjoyed this ficlet. It expresses not merely the kind of relationships shared by the two protagonists, but also the tragedy that neither of them has, at this point in the story, the romance that they want (since it's pretty clear that one reason why they can't be "best friends" is that they each have someone else whom they've been forced to call a "friend" that they have stronger feelings for).

And hey, Asuna/Ayaka? Why not? At least the fact that Asuna looks way younger than she actually is should play for Ayaka! *shot*

What a great little ficlet! I really think you've captured the relationship between Asuna and Konoka well. (And of course I'm not going to complain about a little Konoka/Setsuna or Asuna/Ayaka).
