| Elf-lore 2007-05-30 ch 8, anon. | abuseThis is a very interesting scholarly work. I love how to see not only Tolkien's intentions, but also past his intentions. You've explained some of the assumptions that Tolkien subconsciously incorporated into his work, the impact of his being an inheritor of Colonialism. You've gone deeper into the subtext and uncovered things that Tolkien probably never realized about his work using a different lens, and I applaud you for that. There is one thing I find utterly ironic: Legolas is the one who has a deep connection to his Silvan roots and can commune with trees and all the whatnot, yet Legolas will eventually sail to the West with Gimli while, in your rendition, Thranduil, the pure Sindarin who cannot do all that, will apparently join his Silvan wife. |
| redrose2310 2005-04-09 ch 8, | abusewell thats different |
| Alma's Muse 2004-07-01 ch 8, | abuseI am really enjoying this story and I hope you plan on continuing soon. I love your writing style. Its almost poetic. Please update soon! |
| Tinnuial 2004-03-10 ch 8, | abuseAmazing...absolutely amazing ... I marvel at the detail and care taken with the characters and the weaving of canon into the lovely tale. Thank you so much for this new chapter...I shall look forward to the next one, whenever it may come...take your time! and know that there will be at least one happy reader waiting! :) |
| Anna 2004-03-09 ch 8, anon. | abuseThis is exceptionally good. I still haunt ff.net in the (usually vain) hope that I'll find something decent - that is something (anything!) other than pre-pubescent girls emoting over Orlando. Your story was a very pleasant surprise - a gem in a sea of dross. Loved it for the scholarly air about it (v. impressed by the linguistics), the crisp and clean feel of your narrative, and the fully realised OCs. A very fine tale. I hope to see more of it soon. | daw the minstrel 2004-03-08 ch 8, | abuseI actually got shivers when the Vala appeared. I've read bits of this story before but I sat down and read the whole thing tonight. What a fascinating tone you create. There's a feeling of melancholy, of love for things that are being corrupted. And Legolas's innocence seems to stand in the middle. |
| Soledad 2004-03-08 ch 8, | abuseSo glad to see this story updated again! Your original characters are as intriguing as always, your style is one of the finest in this fandom, and I'm in endless awe of your knowledge where canon and linguistics area considered. So, Saruman was actively scheeming already, wasn't he? How easy it would be to blame the distraction of poor Aiwendil for the message not arriving in time. But Elves are not so easily mislead. |
| Tinnuial 2003-07-22 ch 9, | abuseThis is an absolutely lovely story! The effort that you put into researching your chracters and the world they live in is commendable and very much appreciated. I do look forward to reading more of this story! :) |
| Gecco 2003-07-08 ch 9, | abuseI was flipping around FF.net looking for something good (and despairing at finding anything) when I came across this. Wonderful ^_^! Please do continue! I adore this fic, not to mention your take of young Legolas! I normally avoid young Legolas stories because the author usually feels the need to completly forget canon, an excuse for needless Legolas torture, have characters act completly OOC, and worst of all completly bastardizing Thranduil (usually, making him an abusive wino or a child molester). But what a wonderful surprise! I honestly think this is the best story I've read dealing with young Legolas, and pre LOTR storys. You've woven a wonderful story with, excellent characterization, wonderful details and descriptions, with facts from Silmarillion (and the other books). I look forward to reading more! |
| JastaElf 2003-07-05 ch 9, | abuseErunyauve, this is just wonderful! I don't know how I can have missed it all along, but I'm glad I finally found it! Much to be said for poking about ff.net... (grin) I love what you hae done with legolas's ancestry here, and the people with whom his life has intersected so far. I especially like his beloved milk-mother, "Bidu", and the whole concept of the naming ceremony and everything... And your use of the various Elven languages is just exquisite!! So beautifully done, in such a fine and scholarly fashion... wonderful stuff! Thank you so much for this tale. I look forward to seeing more of it! |
| Soledad 2003-07-05 ch 9, | abuseYour description of the Silvan Folk's greif about winter is deeply touching. Your Legolas is adorable. Innolas is a very interesting character who shows the many facets of an elven personality well: a loremaster who can be every bit as intimidating as a professional warrior. And the idea of an unworthy Dúnadan chieftain is an interesting one. It's good to see them as different persons, rather than just names on a long list. |
| Artemisa 2002-09-24 ch 16, | abuseOne of the best stories I've read. Keep writing. |
| erunyauve 2002-07-19 ch 16, | abuseRe: rettaw's question about the reconciliation of Celeborn and Thranduil and the division of Erin Lasgalen. No, I don't think Tolkien had much more than division of the spoils of war in mind; the fragments that support antipathy between Celeborn and Oropher were not written until much later. However, that they were long-estranged kin is hinted at in LOTR, and it seems very odd that Legolas would never have visited Lórien before the War of the Ring if there was not a good reason to avoid the land. I was referring mostly to the cooperation of Thranduil and Celeborn in dividing the forest, and perhaps their first meeting in many years. |
| rettaw 2002-07-18 ch 16, | abuseGreat work. The portait-chapters as both style and structure are neat. I wish had read this before "Narn e-mbar Lasgalen". But, I am still of the opinion that with chronology-chapters, you need to enclose live scenes within the narrative. Introductions/conclusions like "Letter of Golwenolas" and "Letter to the King's Library" are the overture/reprise of a story and yours set the tone wonderfully. Please may I ask: why do you think Eryn Lasgalen was divided between Thranduil and Celeborn after the War of the Ring? I have my own ideas, but I agree with most of yours so far and am curious about this one. It feels like more than just reconciliation, some real purpose behind it. I am not a Tolkien scholar by any means so hope you will know if JRRT did have something in mind when he decided East Lorien would come to be. |
| snicklepop 2002-05-01 ch 11, | abuseJust found this story. I liked it very much. Your method of story telling is unusual and well crafted. Will move on to some of your other things. Thanks. |
