Oh! This was so sad, wonderful, mournful, a fitting eulogy to one of my favorite characters of the novel.

I have always admired Mercedes: I always felt she was one of those "forgotten" unsung heroes of the story. But in fact, she was the one who, I think, truly deeply knew and understood "Edmond Dantes," & also the "new" Count of Monte Cristo. She was the only one who recognized him upon first meeting. I always felt so bitter about her end in the novel. To me, it was just so so so cruel (& the reason why I couldn't pick up the book in nearly 10 years to read again LOL).

Wonderful ode to her, but so crushingly sad.
