I would love like this

Beautiful. Just beautiful. This is such an emotional oneshot for Mal and River. They're like father and daughter. :) I especially liked the last line:

"Mal tightened his grasp. He realised now that this wasn't a loss he could comprehend. All he could do was be there for [River]."

It's that realization that tops it all off.

What an amazingly richly emotional and original story! I never thought how River would react if her psychic abilities would be gone. But I think you portrayed what she would react like if it did happen. Well done. Please think about adding chapters!

"He realised now that this wasn't a loss he could comprehend"

It seems to me that Mal experienced something at least somewhat analogous to this when he lost his faith at the end of the Battle of Serenity Valley: he'd felt in tune with a higher power, thought he was oriented to and knew his place in the universe and in God's plans, and then in little more than a moment, that feeling and that belief had been ripped from him.

Wow, very beautiful. And Mal reassuring her that when she was bug-eyed crazy he still keep her on board so why would he boot her out now that she is less crazy and telepathic. My heart just broke with the way you wrote that since she couldn't hear the soul of Serenity that she couldn't fly . Again very beautiful!

Some very powerful poetic ideas in this story, and I like the whole notion of hating something that makes you different, sets you apart from everybody else, but once it's gone, you miss it because it has become so much a part of your identity. A nice touch at the end, when River latches on to Mal's suggestion that her new condition might be temporary.
