The thing that I would remind Jade is that some arranged marriages work and some don't. However, this is also true of other kinds of match. In the end, it isn't the way the two are brought together that matters, it is the level of effort that the two parties are willing to make to create a relationship and a bond.

Now, I have to say that your characterisation of Shang in this chapter was particularly worth a smile. It seems that he has inherited his father's (lack of) smoothness with ladies. What I think Jade should learn from this is that he is as nervous and, yes, afraid, as she is.

This story is going in interesting directions and I'm still reading.

Shang is probably confused because he doesn't know what a betrothal necklace is. He'll have to ask Katara for more details (and /that/ will be an... er... interesting conversation). Then he'll probably ask Zuko who'll be... Zuko. The practical upshot of this is a necklace of Dragon-hide with a medalion of gold forged in Shang's own Fire. Because Zuko was always one for dramatic demonstrations and he'll want Shang to do the same thing.

So, Shang was the one in Jade's dream! This could ultimately turn out to be a seriously Bad Thing, given the actual content of that dream.

The key word in this chapter is 'gossip'. I'll bet that's why Aang and Zuko went ahead with this: They've assumed from the rumours about Jade and Shang that the two of them actually are in a relationship.

The thing is... I'm not sure that they're wrong! ;-)
