Touki Yume 3/18/03 . chapter 26*whew* Okay, I've just read the prequel, the story (it should be called a "quel"), and what you have of this sequel in about just two or three sittings. I must say you had me quite hooked to this plotline. This is my review for everything... all fifty-some chapters.
First, I must say that your writing is just excellent. Without too many "big words" that just look cool because they're eleven letters long, you've managed to make everything flow wonderfully well while not making the story sound amateur. I love how well you've portrayed Nuriko's character in that the narration (is that the right word?) is humorous, light-hearted, but also very emotional and generally quite Nuriko-like. His funny thoughts and dry humor, as well as certain expressions, really bring the character alive with normal 21st century human attributes.
I'm also glad to see that you've managed to give just about every character some sort of quirk or distinct quality that really brings them alive and makes them not so... stereotypical-Fushigi-Yuugi-ish. You've strayed from their typical characteristics, particularly those that everyone portrays, and managed to elaborate them into something new but not the least bit OOC.
There were certain things you did that I must point out, simply because they quite entertained me. Above all, I'm overjoyed that the Seiryuu seishi are no longer the "bad guys". That annoyed me to no end in the series and still annoys me in some fanfiction, and it's good that you've been able to see past their evil deeds in the story and understand that beneath it all, they do have hearts. (But I could care less about Miboshi... he was just creepy.) Besides that, I find Nuriko's giddiness over Hotohori's love quite amusing, and Tama's very humanly reincarnation was nice. After all, Tama-neko was human enough. And although I knew pretty early that Chuin was Tomo, Tom being Tama was quite... unexpected. And also, of course, the squat, floaty Miboshi turned into a preppy blonde girl... very amusing.
I must say, though, that as eloquent and natural as your language is, I still think there are some things that could be fixed.
I think we could all agree that one of the weaknesses in the actual anime is that Miaka is constantly, UNENDINGLY portrayed as the self-sacrificing, strong, martyring heroine with Tamahome as her trusty Mr.-I-can-beat-anyone protector who continually comes to save her and comfort her. They're constantly discussing how much they love each other and how they'll die for the other, and for me, if not for anyone else, it really started gnawing on my nerves.
I think you're doing somewhat of the same thing with Nuriko and Hotohori. It wasn't quite so bad in "Another Story", but in this sequel, I think you've overdone it. It seems like Nuriko is constantly the one who is in trouble, needs pity, drawing attention, being protected, being fussed over, and most definitely, he's doing quite a lot of the heroic deeds. (Well, either him or Saihitei.)
While I -am- glad that you've managed to draw the spotlight away from Miaka, I don't really think the problem is cured by simply dubbing someone else as the star. A little bit of attention is okay, but the way that everyone continues to fuss over Nuriko and it seems like he's the only one with problems (I'm talking about solely "Yet Another Story"... "Another Story" is excused from this part of the criticism) really starts to, well, get old. I think it's okay if you want to make Nuriko the main character, and, in fact, I love the idea, but loading everything up on him and him alone is really quite overwhelming.
Aside from that, the only other thing I can think of is that although Tasuki is famous for his swearing and drinking, it didn't really seem like he did too much of either. Drinking, possibly, since it's quite difficult to fight demons and evil seishi while high on sake, but swearing... he expressed himself quite vocally VERY often in the original series and I must say that honestly, in both anime and manga, he really doesn't insert that much profanity in his language. Granted, he uses "ass", "damn", "hell", "shit", and maybe "bitch" more often than any other characters, and when he's very emotional, he can express himself in quite a unique style of language, but typically, his language isn't quite THAT far down in the gutter.
(Of course, if you PURPOSELY exaggerated his profanity to, uh, give the guy more character, I give you hearty congratulations on a superb success.)
Well, that's about it... Quite a long review. I seem to be giving a lot of long reviews lately. But ANYWAY... A lot of criticism, I know, but trust me, you don't have over 700 reviews for no reason. Your writing is simply excellent and I hope you don't drop it at any point in your lifetime. I can't wait to read more... *waits anxiously* |
