The characterisation, since you asked, was spot on :) I'd never noticed the Nate/Quint thing, but now that you mention it!

I was also wondering about the whole Xanth/Magda/Rook thing, mainly concerning the identity of Rufus' mother. If you look at the edge timeline, Rufus was born only a year after the battle of the Free Glades, meaning that he was actually conceived only a few months after it. The only woman that Xanth has any sort of relationship is Magda, who also happens to look the spit of Rufus.

Now, if we conclude that Magda has to be Rufus' mother...how the hell does Rook being her husband work?

My personal theory, is - whirlwind romance, accidental pregnancy, ridiculous amounts of angst (this is the Edge, after all). And then Rook, the big hero he is, steps up and offers to marry Magda, because whilst people are still suspicious of Xanth for the whole Guardians Of Night thing, EVERYONE loves Rook! So Xanth takes Rufus and raises him, and Magda stays with Rook.

Either that or, you know, they have a casual threesome going on... :S
