abuseOK, this is REALLY a case of better late than never. It's been three whole years since I read this story, which inspired me to write my own Adaon-based fanfiction. Somehow, in thirty-odd years, I'd never thought of doing that, which you can see as a rather pitiful failure of imagination in one whose professional identity is shaped by her love of imaginative works. I cannot even begin to tell you how thrilled I was when I Prydain-surfed one day and came across this one.

In my author's note to my first fic, "The Measure of Our Hearts," I mention how exactly this work inspired me. For years--decades--I had wanted to know how Arianllyn and Taliesin would respond to Adaon's death. I'd imagined brief snippets of the scene, even if I never dreamed of writing anything down. But here you do a great job of giving us that sense of impending doom. Given the magic ancestry of many inhabitants of Prydain (Prydainers? Prydainians?), this sixth sense of impending disaster seems appropriate.

I just love your giving Arianllyn a professional identity, as it were--the combination of musical and needlework interests. This definitely influenced my characterization of her as both bard and weaver.

Some lovely details: I really like the bit about her tracing the calluses on Adaon's hands. This is so sweet but also rather sexy.

Love the line "But he had returned to her, only to leave again." WAH! You capture the sadness, not only of Adaon's soon-to-be-final leave-taking, but also of Arianllyn's unfortunate feminine predicament of being stuck in waiting-for-her-man mode.

I also adored, by the way, Arianllyn's wish to cross-dress and go on the quest and Adaon's look of alarm! Perfect. Now what would he have done if she had insisted on joining them?

You know, I wonder if, when Eilonwy defiantly joined the companions, Adaon thought of Arianllyn. Somehow, I imagine those delicate hands of hers could pack a real whallop on the weapon-wielding front if she wished to.

And, while I loved the depiction of Arianllyn and Adaon together, I just adored the portrait of Adaon and Taliesin. I am so sorry we don't get to see this relationship of father and son in the chronicles; I could imagine it would be beautiful. You exactly "get" Taliesin, in my view--that amused, wry, gentle voice. He loves his son and is so worried, but is able to let Adaon choose his own way (that stubborn boy).

I've always just loved this little bit of dialogue:

"Father, Adaon interjected gently, "was it not you who said that it takes more than mere skill to become a true bard?"

Taliesin grimaced. "Likely."

Perfect! That wry grimace--I can just see it. And how like Adaon to point this out "gently." And to want his father's blessing.

Loved the little harp, too. In one scene in my first fic I have Arianllyn coming to discuss Adaon's death with Taliesin and finding him restringing a harp. I rather shamelessly borrowed this idea from you.

How I love the last line. Taliesin's calling his son "My Adaon" is quite lovely, and poignant too, since as we can see he knows his son is quite his own person. "A face that was different, but the same." Or could it also be said "A face that was the same, yet different"?

I'd love to know, by the way, how you decided to write this story. I know you explain at the end that you've always loved Adaon, but I'd still love to hear more details about exactly how you were inspired to fill in the major gap of what Arianllyn is like, and Adaon's relationship both with her and Taliesin. Do tell!

And, please, can I have more? I sound like Oliver Twist . . .

abuseSo I feel a bit silly reviewing a fic that's three years old, but I daresay accolades are as appreciated three years after the fact as they are at the beginning.

This is really beautifully done. It's written very much in Alexander's style, and you've fleshed out Adaon's personality wonderfully. I always wanted to know more about Arianllyn! Poor girl...my one complaint about Prydain is that there weren't more female characters to complement all the men, and it was nice to know there was at least ONE love-interest out there, even if all we got was her name!

The world, and this site in particular, needs more Prydain-ish goodness. Thanks for this contribution - I think it's the best one (besides mine *sheepish grin*).

abuse*Sniffles* Poor heroic Adaon! So peaceful and so brave! Good comparison with Faramir, by the way, I wouldn't have realized that but it's true.I always thought about the broken-hearted girl who was left behind... I know *I* wouldn't want to lose a guy like Adaon...

There's not enough Prydain fanfic in this world... e-mail me if you know where to find any more apart from ff.net, 'kay?

*looks at review* Sorry, I got side-tracked. Beautiful fic, great work! Poor Adaon WAH!

GREAT JOB!

Okay, end transmission.

abuseahh! so beautiful! ::goes away and cries some more::
i can't remember how adaon died...or who he was with, besides taran...oh, wait and that prince dude, too, right? what on earth was his name? argh! i soo need to get those books! it's been forever since i read them!

faramir and adaon...i never thought of that, but it's true. there's always been that gwydion and aragorn thing... frodo and taran, the cauldron and the ring, the nazgul and the cauldron-born...even sam and gurgi, to a slight extent
hehe, but prydain has eilonwy and fflewdur fflam! that's enough to give anything distinction! wonder if there are any fics about him? great belin, that'd be fun!

now i am babbling. that was a beautiful story, so very sad! ::sigh:: beautiful

abuse::tries to hide back glee.:: I *will* do this calmly. Oh, no, no I won't.
YOU DO SUCH A GREAT JOB OF CAPTURING THE CHARACTERS! (I've played Adaon and Arianllyn in an RPG, but you do a MUCH BETTER JOB.)
Adaon is my favourite character in the books, and Faramir is my favourite (aside from Aragorn) in Lord of the Rings, so, yes, I think your analogy is very true.
And, yes, this is a wonderful story with beautiful description, and glorious, glorious... ::words fail her:: "stuff."

abuseI just recently started reading the Prydain Chronicles, and in fact just finished The Black Cauldron today (and I'm already a good 30 pages into The Casle of LLyr ^.^;;).

Thanks so much for this fic. As soon as I started The Black Cauldron, Adaon became my favorite literary character almost immediately, and I never, EVER expected that he'd.well, not be with us for the next 3 books. With all the reading I do, "seeing" Adaon's final moments was the first time a book ever made me cry, and then just sit there in shock for a full five minutes -followed by a strange sort of three-hour depression which ended in me chugging down a huge mug of hot chocolate and sleeping from 3:30pm through to the next morning.

So.ya. Beautifully written. Prydain fanworks are so hard to come by, and especially Adaon-centered ones!

.now, I must go make an Adaon plushie. This absolutely *must* be done.*twitch*

abusewow!!!!

this was such an amazing fic...because it is one of the few out there that is based upon prydain! great great!

adaon is my favorite character (stings on harp tighten threateningly)....um, i mean he is *one* of my favorites (sorry, adaon fans, but gwydion takes the cake in my book) so it was great to see him in a fic
* love the little details about adaon's hands...nice touch there!

and i never thought of adaon as being like faramir...i love faramir, so that makes me admire adaon all the more!

anyways, great stuff...you should definately write more prydain fics '-)

abuseThis is beautifully written, and the dialouge is very much in the style of the Prydain Chronicles. You picked a good moment to write about, with sound reasoning on both sides. Please write more Prydain fics.
