It's always interesting to see Nicholas before he turns evil, especially when he's so emotional and empathatic as he is here - even to Kahlan's surprise. The end, with the terrible parallels between poor Emma and Nicholas's fate as planned by Kahlan, is perfect.

I like the story very much. You portrayed Nicholas as an innocent child and that's what he truly is. I also like that metaphor at the end of the story.

This was both cute and sad. Nicholas was like how you would imagine a little boy to be with his always getting dirty and asking lots of questions, but he was also so sweet and compassionate with the kitten. I find it ironic that both Darken and Nicholas don’t have much luck with kittens, even though poor Nicholas tried to save Emma. I like how Darken comforted Nicholas (I like when Darken is soft), and I like how you wrote Kahlan’s conflicting thoughts. This was a very nice story.
