This is such a lovely and moving story. You've captured Elsie's vulnerability and the tug of war within her heart: pride and grief.

And though Gwen does not appear, she is a strong presence.

Ah, Mrs Hughes is so sweet! That's probably exactly how she'd feel. I think there are probably times when she feels very unsure of herself in this new world. Great job!

This was incredibly sweet and such a lovely glimpse into the relationship of the downstairs characters. I do think Mrs. Hughes views herself as something of a mother to the younger servants. It was a bit sad that she felt necessary to resort to this charade to check on Gwen, but it really was so sweet and kind of her and I think I adore her just a bit more after reading lovely story.

Awww, that was one of the sweetest things I've ever read! There needs to be more Motherly Elsie, I think deep down she is rather maternal towards the maids in her care.
