Duraiken 2005-02-25 . chapter 16I just wanted to say that I sincerely hope this isn't the end to this series. I would love to see the continued exploits of "Wild Dragon," or whatever Ranma feels like calling himself if he decides to start a career as a superhero. While I've never left a comment here before, this is the continuation to what I feel is one of the best stories on this site, and a great story in and of itself.
While 'Children of the Heart' had its moments - especially the Tournament, (I sincerely hope that the Martial Arts area of that series isn't at an end in Courtships,) & Vengeance was good as a mockery of the 'Ranma gets raped by Ryouga & gets pregnant' genre (which I've never been a fan of in the first place; for reasons I've never entirely understood intellectually, I have a very great emnity for rape & those who perform the deed, & a great sympathy for those who are victims of it,) I sincerely hope that someday we'll see more of the world you and your friends created. |
Alathon 2004-11-05 . chapter 16I'm glad to see that this story was continued, and have thoroughly enjoyed the rest of 'Choices Made, Roads Taken'. As with its predecessor 'Chosen Path', it has been a well managed crossover that avoided many of the issues that Ranma crossovers tend to run into.
While there wasn't as much action as I'd expect from a Ranma/Superhero crossver, the one big fight scene at the Javits Center was done well and easy to visualize. The rest of fighting was in strings of shorter but well-defined conflicts, or clear mismatches which didn't need in-depth description, such as main characters vs goons.
The characterization of the Amazons was generous, especially compared to the role Cologne played in 'Chosen Path'. However it wasn't unreasonably so; something like a couple months had passed back in Nerima, and Cologne is not by any means stupid or incapable of adapting, especially with the insertion of the events in 'Chosen Path' into the Ranma 1/2 storyline. Shampoo and Mousse both felt right, and while Shampoo's actually understanding the reasoning behind Cologne's edicts might have been a bit generous, it wasn't beyond belief either.
Ranma felt right for the most part, and the few parts that seemed off norm made sense given the rather brutal experience he went through. The dustup with Big Tex fit perfectly, as did getting tagged in the exercise: if he hadn't been thinking 'inside the box', one of his more glaring weaknesses, he probably could have pulled off a win. I'm kinda surprised his fights didn't result in more property damage, given the way things usually go around him, but it was a different environment than Nerima after all.
The rest of the Ranma 1/2 cast was pretty much spot on; Genma, Nabiki, Kuno, etc. Even those with small parts in the story were recognizeable.
The ending was on the whole excellent, with real progress having been made in Ranma's life, but only a moderate dent being put in his problems.
On the whole, a good read and more than worth the time. While 'Choices Made, Roads Taken' doesn't exactly cry out for a sequel, having a solid ending, I would certainly enjoy reading one. |
Alathon 2002-08-18 . chapter 5I'd really like to see this story continued.. though I'm not sure if this chapter was meant to be an ending.
There's always something nice about having a character in a Ranma fic that will actually fucking stand up for Ranma and take some of the heat off of him. Even when they're superpowered and feel vaguely like self-insertion problem solvers ;p
More importantly, though, the story was solid and well within the believable boundaries of the 'Ranmaverse'. I think we'd all prefer to believe that Nodoka would never go that far, and if pushed would relent at the last moment.. but that's optimism speaking, along with an upbringing in a society that at least claims to value individualism and personal responsiblity.
As a side note.. I agree with Anderson on that one, family honor strikes me as an incredibly bizarre institution. I can understand logically that it can be a powerful cohesive force in a society, and probaby help a society through non-technological periods of growth.. but I fail to understand how it could be subscribed to today. |
