I don't know, I have never thought any Harry Potter understood war.

Most of them are slightly dim-witted boys who never grow up and luck out in having their great enemy undermine themselves to ultimate destruction.

The "atrocities" described don't seem so outlandish when placed in the context of the sort of genocidal monsters that thicken the pages of history.

When the enemy has no fortresses to siege, no cavalry to reduce, reduction of morale must be of paramount importance.

Nice job expanding on the previous story.

well, that would explain why nobody actually sat down and talked about his parents and godfather to him, why even Remus shied away from heart-to-hearts, and why Sirius had the maniacal glint in his eyes. maybe he did forget after all those years in Azkaban, as those memories were probably good ones for him, but the taint never leaves

Heavy. It's a perspective that I wonder if most have considered because when you think about it James and his group were allowed to get away with a lot of stuff and what Rowling puts in her books skates the line and may not completely break it but it comes close. That kind of possible aspect for James and Sirius' characters would then make you think about what else in the books could have been influenced by it. You have to wonder at the memories Snape didn't put into the pensieve or at what kind of man Dumbledore truly was and what really happened between him and Grindlewald.

I truly enjoy your writing whether it's light and humourous or dark, depressing and angst ridden.

ya know, i dont like how some people show the marauders as evil people- and portray snape as the innocent...

when you think about it, the marauders were people who used humiliation. and it was known that snape "knew more dark spells than most 7th years"...that rumor would have gone around, ONLY if he had USED said curses.

yes, sirius and james are shown in bad light in the memory of snape.

but thats from snape's point of view...

you have no idea WHAT snape had done previously to have the 2 hate him that much.

i always found it funny how snape left the penseive out for harry to see and try to view, and the first memory he finds is that one...

if i had had someone going through MY memories, i would have wanted a chance to do the same to his too...

snapes character would have him leave the memory to shake harry's faith in his father.

Whoa! Interesting slant on canon elements. I must admit that I never liked James or Sirius in canon, so I can almost believe this. Talk about the opposite of all the Dumbledore!bashing stories.

It would be interesting to see just how this started. You don't go from fighting under a light-sided banner to killing off what sounds like the non-combatant support structure of Death Eaters (i.e. friends and family of enemy fighters) without a distinct plan in mind.

Voldemort did it for terrorism, pure and simple. Demoralising the Light was a victory in itself, and how better to do that than to target a Light fighter's friends and family?

But why would Dumbledore implicitly sanction such behaviour? It would have reflected very badly on him had the truth come out in the political arena. And the effects of killing people who chummed it up with a violent psychopath would be dubious at best, given that they lived under the constant threat of just such a reaction from their boss. Knowing that the enemy would do that to their family would actually increase the determination of the Dark fighters to kill them before they got around to targeting more of the Death Eaters' own families.

I mean yes, I can see this happening in the HP 'verse, and the way you framed it, it makes perfect sense that it probably did happen. But for what reason would they do it?

Intelligence gathering, maybe? Torturing the information out of the Death Eaters, torturing their families to coerce the Death Eaters to provide the information would be one of the few ways in which the Order could gain intelligence on Voldemort's movements without having a spy in his ranks. That would make sense... and explain just why these murders were particularly gruesome too. A bunch of amateur torturers gathering intelligence via pain & humiliation would leave quite a mess to clean up.

And assuming that this was canon, then Harry should be familiar with this method of interrogation, given what happened in Malfoy Manor. Yes, it's revolting. Yes, it's monstrous. But then again, targeting civilians has become somewhat of a standard practice in a civil war. If you want an example of this aspect of warfare, Google the Boer War and how the British dealt with the insurgent Boers' families.

And a brilliant fic. Chilling, but brilliant. Well done.
