Inarae 12/17/06 . chapter 1 This series is brilliant. One of the best fics I've read in a long time. In fact, I almost didn't add a review because it felt so professional/skillful/complete it didn't cross my mind to treat it as a fanfic. (then common sense luckilly raised it's head.) Anyhow, as far as I'm concerned, this is a work of genius, and I fully intend to consider your version of Snape cannon as much as possible.
Many thanks for the wonderful story, and I hope to read more from you in the future. |
Bubblefang 10/16/05 . chapter 6Your stories are amazing. I have ready many child-Severus stories over my time here. But you have a truly original take I've never seen or even considered before. I'd never imagined that Snape might TRY to make James Potter an enemy. Or even manipulate the Whomping Willow incident. Most people in other stories make Snape a man of formidable intelligence and an IQ of 150, but this is the first time I've seen someone actually write it down.
Malfoy is a little more fiery, I think, then how he is portrayed in the books, but then, he would have had some time to cool down, right?
I found a small mistake in your sixth version - I've read them all - where you said Lily was seventeen. She's seventeen here now. I'd just like to note that. And you made the mistake of calling Peter Pettigrew, Pete Pettigrew.
Barring those two, there is absolutely nothing - NOTHING - no miscalculations of any sort that I can find. Besides the odd spelling or grammar mistake, which is rarely found, these stories are great, riveting, and sum up a whole year in a mere six chapters. While still having a great deal of detail and excitement. I'm a little interested that you didn't add the "OWLs" incident from OotP, like most authors, but it wasn't really that important, right?
In other stories (I'll list no names, ;) ) I've seen other people write as if the bullying done to Sev wasn't really of any concern to him. He just sort of passed it off and had more important things to do. But you. YOU! YOU write and make Sev actually want the enmity! That is a completely new, unique view and I compliment you on it. I had never thought that Severus maybe wanted it. As I said, very unique. Extremely intriguing.
The lines being walked here are stunning. I think in real life you must be a very talented double-crossing person to be able to write this. Either you've picked up a lot of stuff and read a lot of good books, or you're just a natural Slytherin and able to think up these things. Or you've had experience. :D But the quote at the end of a chapter in...I can't quite remember...fifth year, I think, when Sev was just rattling on about his double-dealing, well, that was great. I snickered over that so hard I had a coughing incident and accidently gulped a lot of air.
Usually, when I find moderately funny quotes that I find extremely funny, I copy them down and send them to my cousin for reviews. But since all the darkly humorous quotes in here would make no sense by themselves, I think I'll just have to send her the link to this fic. All the beautiful darkish humor! It's wonderful!
Sometime during the third year I began to wonder if Sev was veering too close to the Death Eater side. Especially after the Josh Matthew incident. The "Crucios" made me feel a little edgy. I'm wondering why none of the other Slytherins reported to Malachite about that. I mean, they can't ALL be scared of Malfoy, can they?
As for the fight between Malfoy and Malachite, it got a little confusing reading and not being quite sure of who was throwing the spells, as there were no names, but what really got me is that Malachite didn't seem half as experienced as I thought he would be. I mean, he was some pretty good spells, but a proper dueler like Malachite should have been able to exercise a little more control over Malfoy. After all, Malfoy was only seventeen, and as much experience as he got from Lord Voldemort, he didn't have all the years that Malachite had.
The killing shocked me a little, I think. I'm beginning to have that same hatred that your James Potter has against the Death Eaters - barring Severus, of course. The Crucios gave me a few shivers - congrats on your writing skills - and it just seemed so ruthlessly horrid of them all. I think I genuinely wanted to wrap my hands around Malfoy's neck and throttle the life out of him. The intensity of which you described the scene really got to me. It was very powerful. I was so sad for Malachite. It didn't bring to tears, like a few fics out there do - mainly the uber Snape-angst ones - but you were pretty close. Malachite changing from snake to human and human to snake REALLY REALLY got to me.
This series just had to end in darkness, didn't it? And now...
