Well, I see you decided when to set the story - I think it was a good choice too.

Like you're aware, I'm not familiar with the Star Fox game, but already you're characterising him well, so I can guess what type of [person/fox/um, let's just say character] he is. I already like Peppy's character (I don't know why, I think it's because of the idea of a fox and a rabbit working together). :)

I think you've done Zelda's character justice; from her character in LoZ:TP (which is the only one I have), I can imagine her acting like that, including wanting to join the rescue party.
