Excellent little oneshot. You did a marvelous job of keeping the dreamer a secret until one little bit and then I knew. ;P

Thanks!

..."Feel free to come back any time...

That was too close.

"It was inspired by my enjoyment of playing the piano." - I took piano lessons (my mom and her brother, who grew up poor, insisted us grandkids do all the things extramurally, that their parents never had money for them to do. As a parenting strategy, it sucks big time. I hope my sister never does the same with my little niece.) from the time I was in first grade up until 8th grade and I LOATHED every single minute.

"He felt in his pockets and saw that he had a lot of money. Not just the one or two bills he usually carried, not even the single hundred that had been his security policy a few years before. No, this was a wad of bills." - Hehehe, I rarely carry cash anymore. At the moment, there is 9 South African rand (just over 1 US dollar) in my wallet (change from paying the excise on an amazon parcel I collected months ago from my local post office, who still do all of their business with cash) and it is the most money I have carried in eons.

What is the piano playing lady's speaking voice like?

"Midnight, not a sound from the pavement

Has the moon lost her memory? She is smiling alone." - Ah, Grizabella. The first time I saw the musical "Cats" it was shown in the mid- to late-90's (I was still living with my parents and I moved into my own flat in mid-2000) on a weekend night on one of the South African TV channels (I cannot remember whether it was the state ones or the satellite ones). The moment I saw Grizabella, she reminded me so strongly of Marisa, the editor's secretary at that time (I was then the newspaper's librarian/archivist).

"Rain?" Tim asked. "No...dusty...ghost town..." He heard a chuckle. "Okay, Probie, no more late-night westerns for you. I'm sorry I introduced you to the Duke." - Those sentences made me smile.

Who issued that invite there right at the end?

How could it not be Tim McGee when you are the writer? Nice job.

Thanks for posting.

Excellent and a little eerie... I thought I knew, knowing your "usual suspects" who it was and then the name Erin confirmed that. Very nice!

Very interesting. I can just imagine Tim connecting with the women he cared about who had passed away while struggling to stay alive.
