I liked your story, so I really want to give you words of wisdom instead of constructive criticism about what really helped me. A favorite writer of mine once advised this: Show, don't tell.

Now I find myself erasing or backspacing whenever I write the words "sad" or "tired". Instead, I write about what a character's body language is and so on. You probably already knew all this, but I just want to impart knowledge given to me. Loved your story!
