Reviews for The Captain of the Virtual Console
MegaBauer 5/20/13 . chapter 6
Great first real battle scene! It was exciting and I liked the fake-out with MewTew and how The Captain's knowledge of Pokémon helped defeat the Thoughtless illusion.

I was worried for the Captain for a minute there when the fake Lapras was taking her away, but I was surprised to see Mew Prime (that's a good nickname for the character, I guess) be the character behind it. (And because I don't know Pokémon, I was just as surprised Mew Prime was actually a nice character. lol)

The Captain was certainly nervous when presented the possibility of having a Pokémon of her own. But, I only wonder which Pokémon The Captain will get for herself. After looking up images of Charmander, he would be a good one to have. Not only is he adorable, but if the power goes out, he supplies his own light. :)

Great job. I can't wait for the next chapter!

Red and Yellow tending to the pokemon was pretty cute, and Red handing down Ratatat to Yellow was a nice touch.

The battle with the thoughtless was pretty intense, you get the sense of a faceless, unstoppable enemy flooding a house on all angles and you can't help but feel the heroes might be outmatched. And they can manifest into the fears of their foes? Very interesting.

A lot of exposition was deployed in this chapter. I liked the reveal of Mew being the guide, that seems like the most appropriate choice for all the pokemon I can remember. It acted really in character too, always the mysterious and playful pink being that appears out of nowhere and disappears way too soon.

Nice work!

I like Mew's appearance in this chapter! Clever kitten.
Hey, do you think you could add a translation for some of the more complex pokéspeak?
Usually, I can pick up what is said, based off context, but not always.
God bless!

wow o_O this chapter is amazing! I loved the battle with the Thoughtless. Blaine and Sabrina working together was really cool, and the bond between them and their Pokemon was strong and really heartfelt. x3

Lapras #2 turning out to be Mew was an adorable surprise! :) I love the ominous foreshadowing about Mewtwo o.o and I LOVE LOVE LOVE how red gave Yellow a Rattata and offered Gancena a Pokemon x33 if she gets one I wonder what it will be!

Eeeeehhh, such a cute way to introduce the fighting style! ;u; It's like- a real video game.
Kiako Ornitier 4/23/13 . chapter 1
Wooooow it's good to see people getting back into writing 8D as for a comeback it seems you're doing well with how many chapters you got up.

I think I'll be following yooooou since your first chapter isn't- TL;DR 8D

Good to see another game world traveller
lalalei 4/4/13 . chapter 5
This chapter was well worth the wait! Everything about it was so detailed! x3

The phone conversation with the Gym Leaders was intriguing o.o a lot of dramatic irony there with Giovanni and all! and Mr. Fuji, apparently!

Gancena's goodbye to Pikachu and Red was d'aww, as was his later concern to him Mom about things being alright. I liked the vivid descriptions of the Lapras, Rapidash, and Ponyta!

the meat of this chapter was very good. Blaine is a really interesting character, and I like ow you combined traits of his form the games and the show. The part with the Ponyta foals was pure daww, and I love how one was shiny! Was Barin a nickname for Ponyta you had in a game? where did it come from?

Alakazam's mind reading session was neat o.o if she had remembered in later games it's called Cerulean Cave we may not have had such an issue XD though i like the Unknown Dungeon name better :P and o_o at the Thoughtless interrupting. They better not hurt the Ponyta!

Also, time to get the obligatory MissingNO joke out of the way and hope they don't run into it :)
MegaBauer 4/3/13 . chapter 5
As I've said before, I know next to nothing about Pokémon, save for Pikachu, Mr. Squirtles because he's a turtle :) , and some other elements (like the Mew Pokémon because of their name being in the movie.)
But, like before, your narration really helps the readers who might be unfamiliar with the franchise become familiar with it.

My favorite scene was the early scenes on the island. I felt really sad for the fire horse Pokémon who was drenched by the wave, but I loved The Captain interacting with him afterwards because it was really cute. All the interactions with them were adorable too. :)

As much as I wanted the characters to believe The Captain, I like that you do give them a hint of doubt as to how she ended up in their universe. You make them all of these characters feel realistic despite the fantastical style of their universe, and I think that helps the story too.

As I said on Twitter, I like that you put the cliffhanger in there. (Reminds me of my own. XD) I admit, because I know little about Pokémon, at first I thought that The Captain was going to discover that the Unknown Dungeon was somewhere near the house. lol

It looks like you've got your first real battle scene coming up. My advise is, just try to picture the battle in your head. Sometimes, things might also pop in there when you're writing.

Good job! I hope the next one will be online soon enough, given your busy schedule. :)
BlackRussian 4/3/13 . chapter 5
Whoa, an update? This must be my lucky day! :D

During the first part, I was initially foggy on who the gym leaders were because I guess it has really been THAT LONG since I've played the games, but your prose quickly caused all the memories to come tumbling back without even having to look them up again, so kudos to that. :) I like the ones you choose, as well. I thought you wrote Sabrina really well, I remember her a lot from the anime because her episode was so creepy!

Can Ponyta's have blue manes in Pokémon? Is that what a shiny Pokemon is? That was a really cool touch, I imagine that's really pretty. I also like how you described the feeling of the mane. I've never really thought about it before, but your description totally makes sense. :)

It's also really interesting that Gym Leaders believe that Gancena is being manipulated by Mewtwo. (I might be confusing my foggy pokemon lore, but didn't the Unknown also like to screw with people's memories using their psychic abilities?) I mean, that's a really hard dilemma for them to face, since I imagine figuring out psychic tampering, especially if was by the world's most powerful pokemon, is extremely difficult and trusting Gancena is kinda like a leap of faith. And-I could be reading this wrong-but it sounds like Rose is also suspicious of Gancena. Hmm. So much mystery.

Aw, and you leave us on a cliffhanger, how cruel! XD Great chapter, I eagerly await the next (no matter how long it takes! *still rooting for an eventual Mewtwo appearance*)
Scaehime-KingofKing's Daughter 4/3/13 . chapter 5
Yeah, we Aspies are a little different, aren't we?
I'm guessing Fire type is your favorite, and in particular, Ponyta and/or Rapidash?
Glad to see an update. Hope your classes are going well. Call/text me if you want to meet up to hang out and get something to eat or whatever.
God bless!
Scaehime-KingofKing's Daughter 12/4/12 . chapter 4
So when is Gancena getting her starter? I'm curious about what it'll be. And when she goes to other worlds, will the Pokemon she's caught come with her?
(So annoying... I couldn't figure out how to accent the e...)
Does Professor Oak know who the 8th Gym Leader is?

In the chapter where Gancena and Rose meet, Rose was suspicious of Gancena at first, wondering if she was one of 'them'... Who are 'they'?

God bless!
BlackRussian 11/27/12 . chapter 4
I like Red's background with his Pokemon, that's a nice touch. You also found ways to add in personal details, it really helps bring this to feeling like a self-insert, giving the reader insight of what it'd be like to jump into a video game and interact with each characters. Not exactly a fish-out-of-water story, sorta the opposite when the main character has an almost discomforting knowledge about the worlds they enter. XD

This chapter is bringing back vague memories of playing Pokemon Blue. I would have failed Professor Oak's test abysmally. XD I liked the foreshadow at the end of the test, it was creepy, and sorta cast a shadow on Professor Oak and gave him a vague sinister vibe, though I think that's really built up with the fear of what the Thoughtless might be doing in Kanto compounded with the natural threats in the Pokemon universe. Though I can't predict where this is going, it's definitely getting interesting. I'm guessing Mewtwo is going to make an appearance. If that's true, then I'd also guess he'll be able to shed some light on the Thoughtless. Or, alternatively...he'll be corrupted by the thoughtless, in which case they are all fucked, and I have no idea how Gancena will get out of this one. Looked like there was some foreshadow with Blue too...No matter where it goes though, sounds like some major gears are going to start turning in the pokemon verse for this plot, which should be cool to see it all play out.
MegaBauer 11/25/12 . chapter 4
First of all, it is good to see you updating again. (Please don't make us wait for so long next time.)

As I've said before, I don't know much about Pokemon aside from Pikachu, and Mr. Squirtle because he's a turtle, and Mew the cat because of the movie. But, your knowledge of the franchise helps those like me understand it more. So, you did a god job there.

And the scene with the pidgey feeding was cute and sweet.

I get the feeling that things are about to get intense very soon, as in The Captain is going to cross pathes the the Thoughtless again, and in a real battle situation. Hopefully, all those little cuties (or tough guys in Mr. Squirtle's case) will help.

Good job! It took a long while, but it is good to see the result turned out so well! :)

btw, I still have my SNES. lol. But, like with just about everybody else's, it's chassis has turned from it's original grey to a shade of puke (except for the cartridge slot.) I guess it does that with age.
lalalei 11/25/12 . chapter 4
Oh wow o.o

D'aww at Red and his Dad stuff XD I love the SNES thing and the Pokemon baseball game! Did Gancena flinch every time he was brought up because it was a big mystery being solved or is she worried eh might fall prey to the Thoughtless? o.o Given that Unovan Pokemon have been seen, I might be tempted to prevent Team Plasma from being formed XD;;

D'awww at red's Pokemon and the wild ones in the park! Blue seems a bit suspicious to me, especially since eh stopped calling Oak. Something tells me HE might be in danger...

That test was surprisingly intense! I like how you threw in your own mistake about which region the Burmy line came from, lol. Cinnabar's a dangerous place, especially with the burnt-out mansion and a volcano. i wonder how she'll get there, too-I can't imagine Fly works instantaneously like in the games! and something tells me Red or Yellow might sneak along XD And Mewtewo and Mew are DEFINITELY a big deal...

Also in the manga, Yellow's power is evolution and super-healing, though using it tires her out.
BlackRussian 5/26/12 . chapter 3
Wow, this fic is reminding me of how much I don't remember or never learned about Pokémon. XD I like how you described the Pokémon though, they are so cute (and yay for them being mostly of the original 150, I remember those!). I don't think I ever thought much about the protagonist or rival from the games (other then thinking of them as counterparts for Ash and Gary) so it was interesting to see them personified where before I just saw more of an avatar for the gamer to slip into while playing the game. Ah, to break out my old gameboy and play again...this is bring back a lot of memories. Good work, Pokémon is such an appropriate place to start!
