These days I'm starting to prefer the second, and this sure fits the bill. I like how you make their feelings for each other so complicated, not secret, sappy, I-slit-my-wrists-for-you-every-night obsession, which is usually how people deal with enemy/rival/antagonist pairings. *Real* people would have mixed feelings.
