I read the book as well as watching the television show (the earlier one with Eric Porter as Soames, Nyree Dawn Porter as Irene, and Susan Hampshire as Fleur). I felt for Soames because I saw how he tried to be good to her; he gave her lovely gifts, took her places, and treated her like a queen. I despised Irene. I like this story very much. Very well written.
