Hush, nameless Guest, "best friend" is no concrete term. :) The Doctor has lived as eleven different men, and maybe some are just more compatible with some companions' personalities than others. Nothing to get hung up on.

Anyway, I think this is a very nice little introspective piece. I especially love the line "The Doctor does not die a Dalek." I can't explain it, I just find that line very powerful for some reason...

Oh that was absolutely wonderful! Loved seeing the arc of his thoughts as he started to think about aloof the hate and the anger before thinking about all the things he still had to love. The last line still broke my heart a little bit though :'(
