I thought this story wonderfully portrayed the sense of confusion and seperation that must set when for someone who has lived, even if briefly, the short of life that one would when travelling with someone like the Doctor. Displaying perfectly the subtle changes and personal awakenings that such an experience must cause and the sense of loss, of withdrawal. To go from such a high paced, exciting existence back to the life one once lived, it must be such a shock.
