This is a wonderful story. Very depressing at times, yes, but only to the level that it needed to be. Akira's decision to let Hikaru play for the Honinbou title was extremely touching, as was his sudden understanding of the past/future link concept. The complexities of their relationship were pinned down rather well I thought, too, though the fierceness of their rivalry was understandably tempered by grief - and the time, of course, that had transformed them into friends. I'm very glad that there wasn't romance, because this was a story about a close friendship, which is, I think, much more realistic canonically. I also think that it felt complete, personally, with all the loose ends tied up and so on, but of course, you'd know better than me. :)

I felt that ghost!Hikaru might have been a little /too/... excitable, if that makes any sense? But otherwise, I liked the characterisations. Akira's originally angry response to the reporters - who were horrible - that he managed to dampen into smoothness. Koyo's assurances that Akira would work through it on his own. Hikaru's "game face".

I'm unsure what my favourite part of this story was, though the way Kuwabara knew it was Hikaru playing is a strong contender. It was a perfect portrayal of him and also strangely comforting, that at least one person aside from Akira knew. For most depressing moment, I'm also unsure - was it the barley tea, or Mitsuko's opinion that Akira meant more to her son than she did? I loved all the little touches to the grief...

i like it a lot. the one thing is that i would have thought Kuwabara's sixth sense would have acted up. he noticed sai haunting hikaru, but not hikaru haunting akira?
