I like it :) Both of your stories are great, but if you're going for something more human than this is it. I love the internal conflict that this main is having by trying to figure out a job. Keep it up, and just have fun with it.

This is very different to your other story, The Green Plumbob, but I like because it very feels realistic, imagining that you have a dark secret and past, you would just want a fresh start. I think this great, I really can't wait for what's in store for the next chapter!
