I'm not sure how you're counting your words, but my guess is that is counting every 5 characters as one word which means that 'a hat' would be one word not two. The same goes for Words per Minute if you ever get asked how fast you can type. The count is 5 characters per word. Also, sort and shorter are two different words.

When I read a book and the plot at one point annoys me I do it same way Travis does it. Go through the pages and find out when it's getting interesting xD
