Love the focus on the trunk and David's empty apartment. It's the perfect setting for him to read a letter from Maddie during that time. I've always imagined that he'd keep that trunk nearby as a reminder of what went right between them before she left for Chicago and not a symbol of all the things that didn't happen the way he'd hoped. David's optimism shines through at some of the lowest times for him and Maddie both!

Dearest Mav, I'm so glad you've found the courage and inspiration to start writing! This is a wonderful decision and your first step is simply brilliant! You've captured David's feelings, thoughts, gestures so perfectly! Maddie never wrote him back, but IF she did, the scene would be just like you wrote it. I love the lavender envelope and the signature - this is SO Maddie! I know David is very thrilled about her answer, so am I - can't wait to read the next chapter! xxx
