As for the dialogue, "Happy birthday darlin'."

Dropping the G in it is just fine to help give the characters an accent. You balanced it out just fine. Many writers go over board and as you noticed yourself it can make them sound less intelligent rather than southern. (Though to be honest, the southern accent isn't the most intelligent sounding accent in the world! LOL!) But we all know that the Dukes were all very smart. :D

I'm glad to see that you are still writing. You have a lot of talent and show a lot of promise. :D
