Puts me in mind of the last scene of Butch Casidey and the Sundance Kid. I really love this line, "Fifty five is not old. I'm middle aged."

Guess this is really the end of their long road. Sad to think they've been running 25 years!
Also guess there's no miraculous way out? This is so poignant, but I guess it really IS how they'd end if the pardon never came

Loved this although it is so sad. It is just how I'd visualize them facing the end together. Dark humor, resignation, and bravery. Still, I'm glad that you left it hanging where you did. Thank you as always for a great tale.
