 Uftaki 11/30/02 . chapter 11WOW! Those are some MAJOR changes you have planned. They all sound good, though. The removal of Corinaw, Glenn's prolonged running away, the massacre at Truce... Stuff that will really come out well, if really delved into and developed... :) This IS a really good fic, which thrives and lends so much possiblities *for* character development. As disappointed as I am that Thieves is put on hold, and this one becomes 'defunct', I admire and support what you're doing. I'm certain your 'updated' version of the story will be even better! :D |
 Lena Ban Obsidian 11/22/02 . chapter 10Whee, all caught up! *grins* I'm glad that my advice is of use. Well, first and foremost, tres cool! Thieving. *evil smile* Mwehehehehh!
When they talk about choosing to be thieves, there's not much of a contrast between each person's feelings on the subject...Glenn, for example, is your only real dissenter, and everyone feels the same about stealing. I mean, they all are telling themselves the same thing. 'It's only for a little while. We're like Robin Hood. Then we can forget about it.' Which is more or less fair as perhaps one perspective, but shouldn't go for all of them. At the least, I think Nor would have a really different perspective because he should technically have slightly different moral values...
I really like the argument between Glenn and Dario; very well done! ;_; I felt so bad for Dario. Which is good, of course. *sighs* But that would snap my nerves, a little brother running off like that!
The whole chapter with Lady Gretchen: _ Cool. Very cool. Pretty good, all around. The only thing is the way you refer to the crime rate going up- no matter how much they stole, unless they robbed a bank, the boys would not really change the crime rate. The way it's written, it sort of implies that the city *had* no crime like this previously, which is about as likely as Cye eating fish every Friday, if you know what I mean. It just needs clarification really; the emphasis of the boys stealing and all of their 'victims' per se 'wondering' works fine, but also there should be some hints that, in the end, the people of the 'fair city' wave it off as a swell in the crime rate.
If you've ever read 'Take a Thief' by Mercedes Lackey, it actually includes a lot of very good information on how to *be* a thief ( Heh) and has a really good background that you could always check yours against; see where the realism is missing in little details like this.
' Ahem. Moving on.
The deal with the merchants...I don't get it, so who are these 'merchants' then and why don't they have a ship at port? I would assume the kids could buy a ticket to travel with the merchants- thinking that merchants are people who buy goods and sell them for a profit, etc.- to El Nido. Why can't they? I'm so confused... O_o;;
I liked the little cheer-up pep talk-ish 'Well, we're not giving up!' Bit. Yay for team-building!
Just some quick pointers about the thiefly thing, however...
- it would actually be a disadvantage for Glenn's 'innocent kid on the street' bit if they got nicer clothes. Nicer clothers pity.
- nicer clothes also the bigger stronger street urchins think you might have cash to spare and grab you on the streets to pound it out of you. (_ Which could be an interesting plot device. Especially if it happened to Nor or Karsh, or even Dario, who would feel especially upset at being 'helpless' because they 'ought to be able to take care of themselves'.)
so are they going to be 'adopted' by any others any time soon? While living outside of the city makes it easier for them in some ways, they could build connections (and you could further the plot) by moving into the city. Meet people (like other thieves to learn from) and make friends (or more enemies, but lord knows they've enough of those)
One thing that I'd kind of like to see is the difference between our honor-bound Dragoon-children and the younglings who've spent their entire lives in poverty. Perhaps one of the other urchins, or even an older beggar could help them understand why they do what they do.
More or less, someone like Glenn (who really doesn't understand why they need to do this, I guess) would probably rest easier having learned the other end- where there is no other way of living and there never has been, and there's a deep-seated resentment for all who are born into better classes. While a thief might feel camraderie towards any thief (and that's not necessarily true either), that same thief might hold a grudge against Lord What'sHisName who keeps thirty serving wenches without pay by allowing them to bed with his young and amorous son, who's dull wife has led him to boredom in bed...

 tami3 11/13/02 . chapter 10WOW...Long, long message you left me there. I notice that you mostly like nintendo games, which leads to the question whether or not you've got that PS2 yet. The price has dropped 50 bucks, after all. I have lunar eternal blue (my christmas present from a year past)but HOW DO YOU BEAT THE THING? It's really hard...and I've never seen the ending and that pisses me off so bad becuase everyone says it's pretty good and half the fics out there dont make any sense unless you know the ending. Anyway, on with the fic...I don't much to say because you already know I like it a lot and as some guy out there said "my feelings will endure". Just that I wanna know if you're going back to termina any time soon and if you'll update a bit more. |
