Revision 1.0 (1/15/05): Revising, just like with all my other stories... the story hasn't been changed, so don't worry.
This was written mostly during my freshman year in high school, when I started to really get serious about writing fanfiction. My writing style has matured greatly since then, and with the years, my interests have changed as well. I still like StarFox, but as things stand, I doubt I shall ever write another StarFox fic. I do want to finish this one, but, alas... so many stories to write, so little time. We'll just see what the future holds...
I hope you enjoy this, my first attempt at something serious.
Disclaimer: I donot ownStarFox, but all my original characters, places, andstory ideasbelong to me.
Chapter 1: Missing“Kip’s team is missing.”
Those words would haunt Peppy Hare in more ways than one…
“See ya after lunch, Peppy!” called Kip Starnova cheerfully, ready to bound out the door.
“Hold on just a minute there, babe,” said Peppy, swerving around in his chair to look at his 19-year old adoptive daughter. “Where, exactly, are you going?”
The young, female kangaroo smiled and indicated her belt, which had a radio, her blaster, a portable analyzer, and other gadgets on it. “Another tracking job,” she explained. “Some mercenaries hiding out in the East Woods. They shouldn’t be a problem to sniff out.”
Peppy smiled back. “Be careful, all right?”
“I will,” she replied. Kip’s voice was cheerful as always. It had once carried an Ausyan accent when she was younger, but being raised by Peppy had caused her to instead develop his slight Southern accent. It infuriated a lot of people, because they both sounded constantly laid-back. Which they usually were.
As the front door of the apartment shut, Peppy leaned back in his chair once more, opening a newspaper in front of him. It was supposed to be just another day.
So why had everything gone wrong?
The raccoon, Ringo Banditstripe, who was an 18-year old pilot for StarFox, coughed nervously. “Well, sir…” he replied, “the Alpha Fox tracking team was supposed to have returned to the base at 13:00. It is now 15:15.”
Peppy took a deep breath. Stay calm, stay cool, don’t take out your frustration on Ringo, he told himself. He knew Ringo a bit, as he was one of Kip’s friends from the academy. “Is StarFox going to search for them?” he asked.
“Of course, sir,” said Ringo. “Beta Fox tracking team is going to search for them at 15:45, once they get organized. A bunch of pilots and others volunteered to search too.”
“Such as?”
“Fox, Falco, Bill, Cal, Slippy, and Kitsune. Plus me,” Ringo said, with a slight smile.
Peppy nodded. “Well, tell them that I’ll be searching along with them.”
As Ringo saluted and left, Peppy closed his eyes. He wanted to tell himself that the team was fine, that they were just lost, but that was insane. Top-class ground trackers made up the Alpha Fox team. It was virtually impossible for them to get lost. So maybe something had happened…
“No,” snapped Peppy, shaking his head. “They’re fine, nothing happened, Kip’s fine…”
But he couldn’t suppress his fears.
“What do you think could have happened?” asked Kitsune, fiddling with a ribbon on the end of one of her tails. Kitsune McCloud was Fox McCloud’s 18-year old cousin, and, as her name might suggest, she was a beautiful young fox with nine tails. She worked as a medic and a newspaper writer for the StarFox team. “Do you think they’re lost?”
No one really wanted to answer that question. Everyone knew the Ground Trackers from StarFox could find their way out a forest if they were blind. “Maybe they’re just being held up, and forgot to call in,” suggested Cal, even though it was obvious he didn’t believe that himself. Cal Rinestar was a coyote, and had once been one of the biggest jerks in the StarFox Academy. Fox and his friends had been at ends with him since they first met him. However, Cal had matured since graduation year (last year), and he was now a pilot for StarFox.
Though everyone knew that his explanation was stupid, they all nodded and pretended that it was possible. Suddenly, an announcement went over each of their radios: “All search pilots for the rescue mission to their ships. All ground searchers start to the East Woods. Repeat, all search pilots to their ships, all ground searchers to the East Woods.”
“Pilots? Well, I guess that’s me,” said Bill, lowering his sunglasses down on his face. “What are you guys doing?”
Fox answered for everyone. “Me, Peppy, Falco, and Kitsune are doing ground search. Slippy, Ringo, and Cal are with you, I guess.”
Slippy gave a cheerful smile. “See ya guys later!” he called, dashing towards the hangar with Bill, Ringo, and Cal.
Falco smoothed back his head feathers, and shrugged. “Let’s get going to the East Woods, or the Beta team will leave us behind.” With Fox, Peppy, and Kitsune following behind, Falco led the way to the East Woods to look for their missing friends.
Her nose hurt, so Kip stuck out her tongue to lick it. She froze as she tasted blood drying on her muzzle. What happened? she thought, trying to remember. All she could recall was tracking through the woods with her team, and then somebody had attacked them. But she had been knocked out before she could do or see a thing.
“You’re not uncomfortable, are you?” came a dignified, yet mocking voice from her left. Kip turned, and came face to face with a chameleon. Behind him, she saw a pig, a chimpanzee, and a gray wolf with a patch over one eye. She didn’t need two seconds to figure out who they were. Leon Powalski, Pigma Dengar, Andrew Olkonney, and Wolf ‘O Donnell.
“StarWolf!” Kip cried. “What are you—?” She was silenced by a hard slap in the face from Leon. Wolf stepped forward and spoke.
“You’re Kip Starnova, aren’t you? Fox’s dear, childhood friend,” he mocked. “I think you’ll be quite useful in our plan.”
“What plan?” asked Kip, her eyes wide with fear.
“What plan?” repeated Wolf. “Why, the one to get revenge on Team StarFox, of course. They will pay for defeating us and making us look like fools!”
“And defeating Uncle Andross!” exclaimed Andrew.
“And being stiff with their cash!” Pigma piped up. Everyone gave him a strange stare. “What? StarFox only pays half of what Andross did!” the greedy pig explained.
Leon smiled. “Well, my dear, don’t look sad,” he said. “We won’t kill you… yet. We need you as bait. But in the meantime…” He unwound a whip off of his belt and cracked it in the air experimentally. “For starters, how protective is a kangaroo’s hide? I never tortured one before.”
Kip whimpered fearfully and shrunk away as far as she could. Fox… Peppy… Falco… help me, please… she begged silently.
