A/N: Just a strange, angsty poem about Severus Snape; not supposed to make
complete sense, really.

Only Failure
by Meressefers

Billowing black does hide regret,
Which billowing black did too beget
In that long-gone lifetime when the lines were blurred.
Dread faces haunt mentality,
Recalling past calamity,
Dissolving broken faith in a sea of unshed tears.

No more drama, only failure.
Life's a bitch; she scorns all valor,
Preferring chary wisdom as the doorway to success.
There's a path he's wished he'd taken,
But old dreams he has forsaken,
Glimpsing tired relics of a fate that's long since passed.

Guilt's his mistress now as always,
Making difficult the cold days
When once the snow fell cleanly over troubles of the heart.
In a time, the wounds well-trodden
May ope, benumbed, besotten
With the solitary sadness of a leisurely dumb thought.

Guilt's his mistress now forever;
Hand in hand, they do endeavor
To tear around the wide world and purge the mind of pain:
Tempting fate and eating peaches,
Sailing to the utmost reaches,
To glimpse that lighthouse Até whom he'll never know again.

He slaves under dead memories' weight;
Teasing, taunting, insatiate,
They pull him down a spiral which has yet to see an end.
When Dark Marks fade away to dust,
And caution flares to dull mistrust,
Perhaps he'll know what might, what could have been.
