Against All Odds

Disclaimer: DB/Z/GT not mine. And the songs not mine either, that belongs to Mariah Carey. The only thing that is mine is the story idea itself. That be all.

A.N.~ Ok, I have the CD with this song on it and I have probably listened to it 100 times, but the other day I was listening to it and it starting making me think about how Bulma and Chichi feel whenever Vegeta and Goku always go off to fight. They have no promise that they will come home, for all they know they could be dead by the end of the day (and that has happened quite often). So this is just a short little song fic I wrote to show how I think they feel some times. Anyway, now that my little 'summary' or 'explanation' or whatever you want to call it is over let me get started. Oh and just one more note, this is going to be around the time when Cell was around, so that can clear up any confusion.

Bulma had been working harder than usual lately, whether it was because she just wanted to finish the repairs on Android 16 in time or if she just wanted to keep herself busy so she wouldn't have to think of the upcoming Cell Games, just take your pick. Though it was probably leaning more towards the latter. She knew Vegeta was planning on entering, and he had boasted that he would be the one to defeat Cell. She wanted to believe it, but she also wanted to be realistic. He had stayed in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for another day, and ever since he had gotten back he had trained either nonstop in the Gravity Room or he would go off on his own.

Bulma looked up and noticed that only one more day was left before the Cell Games would begin. She decided maybe some rest would do her some good so she decided to do that. She picked up her tools and cleaned everything back up before leaving to get some rest. She stopped at the door and looked back at all the unfinished work that needed to be done. Then she sighed and turned the light off before closing the door.

Chichi looked out the window at Goku and Gohan. For some reason Goku wasn't worried about Cell, he just wanted to spend time with her before he would have to leave. That made her feel a little better, he wanted to stay and spend time with her. She only wished she could feel as carefree as he was, she was so worried that something would happen. And one, or both of her boys would never come home. She turned away and went back to her cleaning. That's what she needed, to clean, anything to take her mind off the Cell Games.

After a few minutes she stopped and realized she had cleaned everything, twice. She had been going over cleaning everything all day long, but as long as it kept her busy, she didn't mind. She sighed and decided it was time to rest; she turned the light off and walked away.

~Day of Cell Games~

Bulma woke up feeling next to her for any sign of Vegeta, hoping he would be there so she could at least tell him goodbye.

But she was too late, he was already gone she got up and slipped her robe on and walked out onto her balcony. She looked at the sky just in time to see the stream of energy that she guessed was Vegeta leaving.

She stood there trying not too cry, 'No, I will not cry, I will not think about him leaving, and I will NOT think about him dying and never coming back!' But as hard as she tried to tell herself that the more the doubts came. She finally gave up and sat down on the edge of her balcony, where Vegeta had sat many times looking at the stars, she laid her head down on her knees and cried. Cried for all the things she had never gotten to say just before he left, cried because she may lose the one person whom she cared about and who had returned those feelings. She cried to the point where she felt sick and she went back inside to hoping to leave her troubles, hoping, but not expecting.

***

How can I just let you walk away

Just let you leave without a trace

When I stand here

Taking every breath with you

You're the only one

Who really knew me at all

***

Chichi walked to the door with Gohan, Goku, and Piccolo.

"Are you sure you wouldn't like to have some lunch before you leave?" She called.

She was trying to stall them, they knew it and she knew it too. But they couldn't blame her for trying. "No thanks Chichi, we better be off." And with that they were gone.

She stood staring at the sky wishing there was something she could have done, something she could have said to make them stay.

Her mind drifted to all the good times and memories that had been made in the last week or so. Then she remembered the night when she had gone to her room to try to rest, only to be bombarded with doubts, fear, and most of all loneliness. Goku had walked in and seen her crying, he had known what was wrong and had almost looked guilty at first, but then set that aside so he could be with his wife and comfort her right then. He had held her so gently, rubbing her back, letting her know that he was still there. Only he wouldn't be 'there' long was the problem. She had cried for a while, and he had almost felt like crying too, for feeling like he had put her through this. "I love you Chichi." He had whispered so soft she almost hadn't heard him. She answered still choking on her sobs, "I love you too."

How can you just walk away from me

When all I can do is watch you leave

Cause we've shared the laughter and the pain

And even shared the tears

You're the only one

Who really knew me at all

It had been a few weeks since those awful Cell Games had been over. Chichi still couldn't believe he was gone. Her Goku. He had sacrificed it all to save her, their family and friends, the entire universe. She wanted to be happy; she wanted to go on with her life. Gohan was finally getting on with his studies like she had wished. She had found out she was pregnant. She should be happy! But without Goku, there was something missing, an empty space in her heart that only Goku knew how to fill. Of course she still had the memories, she was thankful for those. But it didn't help the emptiness that she felt inside. She wanted to believe that this was all I dream and she would wake up at any minute and Goku would be there laying beside her, and she could just curl up beside him and lay her head on his chest. But she knew that wouldn't happen. He wasn't coming back this time, and she would just have to face that.

***

So take a look at me now

Oh there's just an empty space

And there's nothing left here to remind me

Just the memory of your face

Take a look at me now

'Cause there's just an empty space

And you coming back to me is against all odds

And that's what I've got to face

Bulma and Chichi were both in the stands watching the World Martial Arts Tournament take place with both their husbands in it. But after Gohan was attacked and his energy was taken from him, their husbands had left. The first panicky thought through both their minds was, 'Oh no, not again. He will not leave me again.' Both of the women had felt like crying, but had held back only for that moment.

***

Bulma's thoughts~

'No, Vegeta! Where are you going? Please don't leave.' She bit her lip to hold back the tears as the little stream of energy faded away in the sky. 'No.'

***

Chichi's thoughts~

'Goku! Why? You had just come back? You had a whole day to spend with your family! Your FAMILY! Why are you leaving again?' Questions ran through her mind until she thought she would faint. She glanced up at the sky at the trail left by her husband's energy. She turned her head biting back the tears. She sighed softly and mumbled to herself, "Why."

***

I wish I could just make you turn around

Turn around and see me cry

There's so much I need to say to you

So many reasons why

You're the only one

Who really knew me at all

***

Bulma could feel it. She knew he was gone, she didn't know how or why, she just knew. A cold emptiness began to grip her heart and she tried not to cry. Yamcha was right beside her driving the plane and she knew if she started crying he would ask questions, questions she didn't feel like answering right then and probably never would.

***

Chichi had been unconscious. She could hear her dad trying to wake her. Then she caught something he said, ". .hurry." That's all she needed then her eyes shot open and she immediately began looking for Goku. 'Where.' Then she sprung up and started running she got there in time to say a very sad goodbye. She couldn't hold back the tears as Goten clung to his daddy for all he was worth. She stood crying, then tried to pry Goten away from him when Baba said it was time to go. She gave one last longing look to the husband she knew she would never see again, then shut her eyes and let the tears stream down her face. She stood there, hoping that when she opened her eyes some miracle would happen and he would still be there to stay. But when she opened them, he was gone.

***

So take a look at me now

'Cause there's just an empty space

And there's nothing left here to remind me

Just the memory of your face

Take a look at me now

'Cause there's just an empty space

But to wait for you Is all I can do

And that's what I've got to face

Take a good look at me now

'Cause I'll still be standing here

And you coming back to me

Is against all odds

That's the chance of got to take

***

Bulma and Chichi looked at their husbands who were now back and alive! They wanted to cry, but not because they felt empty this time, because they had gotten something back they thought they could never have again. And this time they weren't going to let them go again.

Take a look at me now

Yes, yes, I know Goku leaves again in GT. But come on now I'm a sucker for romance I just had to make it sound like a happy ending. Anyway. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing it. I really like writing song fics. Anyway. please review. I'm not going to force you, but come on now I did ask nicely... :D
